PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chael Mondello (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Alex Shaw was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chael Mondello!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alex Shaw!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Daniel Franklin and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shaw has managed to clinch.
Shaw slowing the pace effectively.

Shaw breaks from the clinch.
Mondello looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Mondello changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Shaw looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Mondello working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Shaw sneaks out the side door and pushes Mondello away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Shaw instigates a clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Mondello decides to pull guard.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!

Mondello looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Shaw passes into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Shaw is nestled in close to Mondello, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Shaw is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Mondello is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Shaw pulls his head out easily.
Mondello is pressing down on Shaw's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Shaw throws a big right hand that misses.
Shaw has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Beast Playground. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.

Mondello working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shaw doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shaw manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Shaw stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Shaw has managed to clinch.

Shaw pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Shaw clinches up with Mondello and pushes him back against the cage.
Shaw tries to circle away but Mondello has him pinned against the cage.
Shaw looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shaw can't break the clinch.
Shaw throws an elbow that misses.

Shaw pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Shaw has closed the distance and engaged Mondello in a clinch.

Shaw breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Shaw closes the distance and pushes Mondello back into the cage.

Mondello decides to pull guard.

Mondello looking for a guillotine here but Shaw defends easily.

Shaw has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Mondello to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Shaw is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Mondello pulls down on the head and he's put Shaw to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Chael Mondello!
