Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kung Lao! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gustavo Mendes! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Leandro Rodrigues and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lao closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Lao lands in his opponent's guard. Lao controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Mendes trying to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Lao won't allow Mendes to sweep him here. Mendes is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Lao wants to control from the top but Mendes keeps moving. Mendes tries to land a sweep but no joy. Mendes managing to control the position.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Lao scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lao wants to pass to mount but Mendes is defending the position. Lao takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mendes slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Lao slips nicely into half guard. Lao trying to mount his opponent but Mendes defends it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendes tries to roll over but Lao keeps him under control. Mendes looks gassed! Lao is taking a breather. Mendes says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Mendes wants to improve his position but Lao is controlling well.
Mendes gets full guard. Mendes is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Mendes not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Lao is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Mendes looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Lao slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mendes looking to control.
Mendes bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Lao's guard. Lao keeping moving, preventing Mendes from controlling successfully. Mendes pushes down on Lao's leg and manages to get into half guard. Lao is not content to let Mendes control the position. Lao wants to improve his position but Mendes is controlling well.
Lao moves into full guard.
Lao lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Mendes! Mendes is looking to get to half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mendes bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! Mendes drops back, looking for a kneebar! Lao looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Lao looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Lao! Lao taking a breather here. Lao tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Lao has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Lao working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Mendes gets back to half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Kung Lao dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Lao scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Mendes tries to buck Lao off but Lao is having none of it. Lao wants to control but Mendes is keeping him busy. Mendes is looking for a sweep. Mendes wants to improve his position, back to half guard but Lao has ideas of his own. He's got hold of Mendes's far side arm and it looks like he's got an Americana. Ohh! Ohhhh! OOOOOOOOOH! A human being's arm is not meant to bend like that! Mendes is tapping like a morse code operator on the Titanic! SOS SOS! He's out of here! Great win for Lao!
