PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Tony Jaa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Richard McConomy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tony Jaa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Richard McConomy!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Stewart Dunkirk and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jaa stuffs the takedown attempt from McConomy. McConomy gets slowly back to his feet.
McConomy tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Jaa feints and then cracks McConomy's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow McConomy down.
McConomy is looking to clinch.
Oooh a lovely combination from Jaa sends McConomy down but not out. Jaa dives into side control looking to finish.


McConomy is rocked!


It looks like Richard McConomy has been cut.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Jaa stands up and beckons McConomy to his feet.
McConomy is still on wobbly legs! Can Jaa finish him?

Jaa pushes McConomy up against the cage in a clinch.
McConomy seems to have recovered his senses.
Jaa lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Jaa breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jaa tries to close the distance and clinch but McConomy swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
McConomy throws a right hand that Jaa ducks under and follows up with a left that Jaa also avoids with ease.
The fight stays on the outside here - Jaa looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Nice takedown defense from Jaa. No joy for McConomy on that attempt.

so McConomy counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
McConomy stops Jaa from standing up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

McConomy shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Jaa but Jaa pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Jaa tries to close the distance and clinch but McConomy swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
McConomy shoots in looking for a takedown. Jaa tries to sprawl out of it but McConomy keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Jaa manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

McConomy shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Jaa as he avoids it easily.
Jaa tries to clinch but McConomy moves out of range.

Jaa is looking to clinch but McConomy is avoiding it.

Jaa clinches.
Jaa connects with a knee to the head.

Jaa breaks from the clinch.
Jaa circles away from the clinch attempt
and Jaa counters with a nice body kick.
McConomy will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Jaa.
McConomy shoots for a takedown but Jaa saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Jaa has closed the distance and engaged McConomy in a clinch.

Jaa pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Tony Jaa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jaa keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Jaa closes the distance and clinches.

McConomy tries to close the distance and clinch but Jaa swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Jaa darts in and clinches McConomy up against the cage.
McConomy takes an elbow to the temple.

Jaa breaks the clinch.
Jaa is looking to clinch.
McConomy should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
McConomy tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Jaa paws at him with a jab and circles away.
McConomy shoots in but no luck this time.
McConomy moves in looking to clinch but Jaa pushes him off.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Jaa, right into the meat.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jaa keeps the fight on the outside.
Jaa moves in looking to clinch but McConomy pushes him off.
Jaa fails in his attempt to clinch.
Jaa throws a head kick that half lands.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


McConomy tries to clinch up but Jaa circles away and keeps his distance.

and Jaa counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Jaa.
McConomy tries to pull guard but Jaa holds him up against the cage and eventually McConomy drops back down to his feet.
McConomy has had enough of the clinch but Jaa keeps him there for the moment.

Jaa escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Jaa lands with a thumping leg kick.
Jaa is looking to clinch but McConomy is avoiding it.
McConomy shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Jaa but Jaa pushes him off and we're back to square one.

McConomy tries to keep at a distance but Jaa has taken the fight into the clinch.

McConomy successfully pulls guard.
Jaa wants to stand but McConomy is controlling his posture from full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
McConomy is controlling Jaa's posture.

McConomy manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Jaa wants to control but McConomy is having none of it.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
McConomy throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Jaa because McConomy loaded up on that one.

Jaa tries to reverse the position but McConomy maintains control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McConomy throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
McConomy tries to control but Jaa wriggling away.

McConomy working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Jaa turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips McConomy off and cradles Jaa's limp body as McConomy celebrates with his corner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:04 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Richard McConomy!
