The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith tries to clinch but Freitas is having none of it.
Freitas fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Freitas displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.
Smith tries to clinch but Freitas moves out of range.
Smith tries to clinch up but Freitas circles away and keeps his distance.
Freitas misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Smith throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

and Smith counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Freitas tries to pull guard but Smith holds him up against the cage and eventually Freitas drops back down to his feet.
Alan Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sergio Henrique Freitas.

Smith pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Smith tries to clinch but Freitas moves away

and Freitas counters with a takedown into side control.

Freitas is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Smith has escaped the position, nice work there.

I looks like Freitas might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Smith pushes Freitas away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Freitas gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Freitas looks up at the clock and then as Smith takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Freitas smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Freitas stands up.
Smith clinches but Freitas breaks the clinch

and Freitas holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Freitas is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Smith pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Freitas works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Freitas looks gassed!
Smith wants to stand up but Freitas is controlling him.
Freitas must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Smith pushes Freitas off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Freitas throws a combination that misses

and Smith counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Freitas has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Smith uses from the top position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Freitas is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Smith rolls with it to try and escape but Freitas cranks on the arm and Smith is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
