Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Akihiro Koizumi! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Joe Canner! The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Hirohito Nitta and Yuuki Gou.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Canner connects with a body shot. Koizumi throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Canner on the side of the head. No luck for Canner with that takedown attempt. Canner takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him. Canner throws a lazy head kick and Koizumi counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Koizumi has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Koizumi lands a couple of elbows. Koizumi wants to control from the top but Canner keeps moving. Koizumi wants to pass the guard but Canner is keeping the position. Canner pulls Koizumi in close to his closed guard and prevents Koizumi from doing any damage or advancing position. Canner is trying to keep Koizumi in close.
That's one minute gone in the round. Koizumi is working Canner over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Koizumi throws a strike but Canner rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Koizumi keeping moving, preventing Canner from controlling successfully. Koizumi wants to sweep but no luck. Koizumi is trying to keep Canner in close.
Koizumi lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Canner throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Koizumi is looking to work some ground and pound but Canner has wrist control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Canner has momentary wrist control but Koizumi slips an elbow through the middle.
Canner is rocked! Canner being controlled here, momentarily. Canner is still in real trouble! Can Koizumi finish him? The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Koizumi gets to his feet and stands over Canner, holding his ankles. He dives in with a big left hand that connects! Canner felt that one! Koizumi unloads more punches and elbows and this one is over! The ref has dived in to save Canner from any more punishment!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:29 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Akihiro Koizumi!
