PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Josef Hardy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robbie Ray (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Josef Hardy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Robbie Ray!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Steven Brown and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ray cracks a nice hook into Hardy's ribs.

Ray gets the takedown into side control.
The ground and pound from Ray seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Ray wants to control but Hardy is keeping him busy.
A bit of a lull in the action here.

Ray decides to stand up, so the ref orders Hardy to his feet.

Ray shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hardy napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Hardy can't do much from the bottom here.

Ray tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Ray has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Hardy is trying to control Ray's posture but Ray avoids it.

Ray tries to score with some ground and pound. Hardy controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Hardy avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Ray.

Ray stands up and beckons Hardy to his feet.

Ray closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Ray has picked Hardy up - he's going for a ride! Ray dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Ray thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Ray thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hardy's head.
Hardy keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.

Ray decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Hardy gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Hardy working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ray doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ray manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Hardy really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Ray throws a big right hand that misses.

Hardy will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Hardy shoots in and bounces Ray off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Ray throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Ray looking for a sweep. Not yet Ray, not yet.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hardy throws a strike but Ray rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hardy is defended easily by Ray.

Hardy scores with a takedown into Ray's guard.

Ray pushes Hardy off and gets back to his feet.
Hardy tries to close the distance and clinch but Ray swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
A little jabbing left from Ray on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Ray closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Hardy to the mat! Hardy manages to get full guard.
Hardy keeping moving, preventing Ray from controlling successfully.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ray throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Hardy works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Ray must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Hardy is trying to control the position but Ray postures up.

Ray has gone for a leg lock! Hardy slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ray's guard.

Ray wants to stand and escape but Hardy is having none of it.
Hardy is looking to work some ground and pound but Ray has wrist control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hardy postures up in Ray's guard and throws a big left but Ray blocks it.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Ray preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Ray has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Hardy is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Ray leaves Hardy with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Hardy is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Ray is looking to work some ground and pound but Hardy has wrist control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Ray drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Hardy is trying to control Ray's posture but Ray avoids it.

Ray stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Hardy ducks under a wild hook from Ray.
It looked like Hardy was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Robbie Ray seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hardy shoots in but no luck this time.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Josef Hardy. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Ray throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Hardy tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Ray is in Hardy's guard.
Hardy pulls Ray in close to his closed guard and prevents Ray from doing any damage or advancing position.

Hardy dives in and grabs Ray's left leg, looking for a takedown. Ray pushes down on Hardy's head and hops out.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Hardy is pulling down on Ray's head. It's preventing any offense from Ray, at least for the moment.

Hardy controls Ray momentarily but Ray frees himself.
Ray missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Ray throws a big right hand that misses.
Ray postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Ray tries to stand but Hardy is controlling from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Hardy gets caught flat footed, as Ray shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Robbie Ray is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Robbie Ray comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Ray has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Robbie Ray decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
