Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
15 - 9 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Carl Sheppards! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Richard Cottingham! The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Sergei Dronov and Konstantin Menshow.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cottingham will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. An attempted straight right counter from Sheppards misses the target. Richard Cottingham seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Sheppards lands the left hand. Sheppards looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Sheppards throws a looping overhand right but Cottingham ducks down to avoid it. Sheppards misses with an uppercut. Cottingham saw that one coming. The fighters circling - Sheppards throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Cottingham feints a counter leg kick. Sheppards looks to land a left hand but Cottingham moved out of range nicely. Sheppards's corner calls for a 1-2. Sheppards obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. Cottingham shoots in but Sheppards avoids the takedown attempt easily. Cottingham changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Sheppards tries to avoid it but Cottingham manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Sheppards to the ground. Sheppards escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. It looked like Sheppards wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Carl Sheppards has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Richard Cottingham. Horrible takedown attempt by Cottingham or perhaps it was just good defense by Sheppards, which made it look bad. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sheppards lands a glancing blow to the side of Cottingham's head. Cottingham with a lazy takedown attempt and Sheppards scores with a counter punch that sends Cottingham to the canvas! Sheppards smells blood - he's punishing Cottingham with more strikes and the ref has stopped it! Cottingham has no idea where he is - he's tackled the ref... oh dear, poor guy, the crowd is in hysterics!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Carl Sheppards! Carl Sheppards really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Spartan Nutrition logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
