PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Owen Whipple (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ronaldo Faber (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Owen Whipple!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ronaldo Faber!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Daniel Franklin and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Faber decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Faber is working for a submission of some sort.
Faber not doing much here.

Faber is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Faber throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Whipple on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Whipple is trying to get back to full guard.
Faber has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Faber is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Whipple sees it coming and defends easily.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Whipple has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Faber prevents Whipple from improving his position.

Whipple got a little sloppy there for a moment and Faber has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Whipple has managed to get both his arms back between Faber's legs - danger averted.

Our spies down at at Bi-Polar Asylum LV's #1 Public Training Center inform us that Faber has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Whipple throws a strike but Faber rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Whipple is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Whipple really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Faber wants to control from the top but Whipple keeps moving.
Whipple wants to get back to his feet but Faber is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Whipple has his foot on Faber's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Faber works his way back into a safe position though.
Faber stays in close to Whipple's body and controls the position.

Whipple looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Whipple manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Faber manages to get himself to full guard.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Faber drives through with a takedown into Whipple's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Faber sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Whipple's guard.

Whipple is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Faber pulls his head out easily.

Faber is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Whipple is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Ronaldo Faber!
Ronaldo Faber was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
In defeat, Owen Whipple stepped up to the mic, saying 'I guess I'm just not that good. '.
