PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mario Silva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Edison Arantes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Silva comes to the cage accompanied by Cult Of Personality. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Edison Arantes was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mario Silva!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Edison Arantes!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Matheus Silva and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Arantes drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Silva looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!

Arantes content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Silva is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Arantes is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Arantes is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
My spies in Animal House inform me that Arantes has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
It looks like Arantes might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Let's hope that Arantes has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Silva avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
It looked like Silva wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Edison Arantes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Arantes throws a push kick but Silva slaps the foot to one side.

Arantes gets caught flat footed, as Silva shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Arantes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Silva. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Arantes has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Arantes is on top in guard.

Silva is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Arantes is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Arantes.
Silva is trying to control the position from the bottom.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Silva is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Arantes is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Arantes moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Arantes lands a left and a right that send Silva crashing to the mat, dazed. Arantes thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!


It looks like Mario Silva has been cut.
Silva checks a low kick from Arantes.
Arantes fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Silva is out of range.
Silva is looking to counter the offense by Arantes and move into the clinch.
Arantes has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Arantes throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.

Arantes shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Silva's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Silva is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Arantes is aware though and is defending well.

Silva escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Arantes gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Edison Arantes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Mario Silva's cut.
That's time! Silva's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!


Arantes swings away with a leg kick that misses.

Arantes is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Silva's half guard.
Arantes perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Arantes slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Arantes is riding his opponent, not letting Silva buck him off.
Arantes's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Edison Arantes is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Edison Arantes comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Arantes has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
