Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mark Thomson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Raivo Kull! The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Paulsen Ambrosius and Wagner Zegers.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kull throws a leg kick that misses. Thomson shoots and misses and Kull cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Thomson shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kull as he avoids it easily. Thomson has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Kull. Thomson shoots in but Kull avoids the takedown attempt easily. Kull feints a counter leg kick. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mark Thomson. That's going to take a lot out of him. Thomson takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Thomson shoots in for a double leg but Kull sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Kull throws a lazy head kick and Thomson counters with a nice double leg into guard. Thomson controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Kull is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Thomson is controlling him. Kull controls Thomson momentarily but Thomson frees himself. Thomson loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
That's one minute gone in the round. Thomson drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Thomson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Kull is trying to keep Thomson in close.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Thomson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Kull has his feet on Thomson's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work. Mark Thomson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Kull keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Thomson tries for a takedown but Kull circles away easily letting Kull counter with a right hand. Kull lands a nice looking kick to the body. Thomson takes a step back to recover. Thomson fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Kull steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Thomson. Thomson is breathing heavily. A kick lands to the mid section there for Kull. Kull gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Kull told us before the fight that he's been working on his elbows. An under utilised technique these days - let's see if it can sway the outcome of the fight. Kull breaks from the clinch.
Thomson fails with the takedown and Kull makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Kull closes the distance and clinches. Kull lands an elbow that stopped Thomson in his tracks for a moment. Kull is pressed up against the cage. Thomson has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Kull down to the mat. Kull avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Thomson doesn't succeed with the takedown and Kull counters by clinching up. Kull creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Thomson's defenses. Nice body punch from Kull - that landed with a thud.
Kull lands a glancing elbow in the clinch. Kull lands a nice elbow from the clinch. Kull lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards. Kull lands an elbow inside that Thomson shrugs off. Thomson is trying to drag Kull to the mat but Kull just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Kull lands an elbow that stopped Thomson in his tracks for a moment.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A shot in the inside from Kull. Kull lands a nice shot to the body. Thomson tries to score a body lock takedown but Kull shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Kull pushes Thomson back against the cage and unloads with a body punch. Kull breaks the clinch.
Thomson misses with a takedown and Kull counters with a nice uppercut. Kull pushes Thomson away with a front kick. Kull lands with a straight right. Thomson didn't see that one coming. Kull lets loose with a powerful body kick. Thomson will feel that in the morning. Kull throws a head kick but Thomson moves out of range.
Kull lands a big head kick that sends Thomson tumbling to the mat! Kull takes a step backwards and waves Thomson back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Thomson is rocked! Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Thomson on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Kull. Kull obviously looking to wear him down.
Oh Thomson is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Thomson with a lazy takedown attempt and Kull counters with a stiff right hand. Kull lands a big head kick that sends Thomson to the canvas! Kull follows up with strikes from the mount that forces the ref to step in and stop the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Raivo Kull!
