PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ping Lin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ongka Ongka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ongka is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Abebe. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 9 - 0, fighting out of London, Ping Lin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 15 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ongka Ongka!
The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Saam Ante and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lin tests Ongka's chin there with a solid looking shot.
We've been hearing reports that Lin has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Lin closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Lin lands with a left to the head.
Lin working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.

Lin manages to pull guard.
Ongka is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Lin is on top in guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lin tries to free his leg and advance position but Ongka is retaining full guard.

Ongka has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Lin is working away from the top position though.
Lin wants to free his trapped foot but Ongka is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Ongka makes his way to full guard, as Lin worked for a kimura.
Lin in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Lin trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Lin accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Lin is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Lin stands up over Ongka, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Lin postures up in Ongka's guard and throws a big left but Ongka blocks it.
Ongka has Lin pulled in close to control his posture.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lin wants to control from the top but Ongka keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Ongka Ongka seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Lin clinches up against the cage.

Ongka has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Lin regains guard immediately.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ongka wants to control from the top but Lin keeps moving.
Lin is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Ongka trying to control but Lin is working from the bottom.

Lin is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Ongka defends well.
Lin can't keep his opponent in guard - Ongka advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ongka prevents Lin from improving his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ping Lin dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Ongka walks forward, straight into a front kick from Lin.
Ongka throws a left and a right that both miss
and Lin counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Ongka swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Ongka looks to score with a jab to the body but Lin is just out of range.
Lin is looking to clinch but Ongka is avoiding it.
Lin connects with a body shot that sends Ongka's belly button to the back.
Lin jabs at Ongka's body.
Lin throws a sloppy head kick and Ongka moves out of range easily.
Lin moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.

Lin throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Ongka was covering up waiting for the punch and Lin finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Ongka is looking to stand back up but Lin counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Ongka.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Lin looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Ongka with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Ongka is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Lin's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Lin's back!
Ongka has the hooks in. Lin is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Lin is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.

Lin manages to reverse the position and now he's in Ongka's guard. Nice work there by Lin.
Lin is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lin postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Ongka is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Lin, into his guard.

Ongka thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Lin is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ping Lin dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Ongka misses with a straight left.
Ongka misses with a series of wild punches.
Good shot there by Lin.
Ongka misses with a double jab.
Ongka tries to land a leg kick but Lin saw it coming and moves away.

Lin bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Lin tries for a kimura but Ongka is defending well.

Lin is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Ongka is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Ongka is trying to control Lin's posture but Lin avoids it.
Ongka tries to improve position but can't.
Lin in side control, throwing shots but Ongka defends.
Ongka is looking for a sweep.

Lin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Lin controls the position.

Lin working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Ongka can't do much from the bottom here.
Ongka might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Lin haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Ongka tries to escape but Lin is in control.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Ongka missing with a left hand there. Lin was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Lin lands a glancing blow to the side of Ongka's head.
Good standup being displayed there by Lin as he connects with a hook.
Lin keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Lin is looking for a counter combo.
Lin is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Ongka can do to turn this around?
Ongka tries to move into range but Lin moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Lin scores with a shot to the body.
Lin thows a body kick. Ongka tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Jab, jab by Lin - just one landing.
Ongka on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Ongka takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Lin lands with a thumping leg kick.

Lin gets a clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Ongka trying to control the position from guard on top but Lin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Ongka is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Ping Lin overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Lin is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Ping Lin is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ongka seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Lin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Ping Lin showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Lin has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Ping Lin opened up his post fight interview with a scream to camera that he wants a title shot! Whether he deserves the shot will be up to the management of the organization, so I guess he'll have to wait and see.
