PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Peso (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wood Pecker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pecker is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by The Woody Woodpecker Song (Short Intro). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Johnny Peso! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Wood Pecker! The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, Daniel Franklin and Winston Alpacca.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A right-left combo lands from Pecker. Pecker scores with a head kick.
Peso throws a combination. Pecker tries to block but a couple of punches get through. A jab from Peso misses. Pecker punishes Peso's body with a nice straight punch. Peso fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Pecker, pushing him back against the cage. An uppercut to the body lands inside from Pecker. Pecker is looking to control Peso's arms but Peso gets an underhook and turns him. Now Pecker has his back to the cage. Pecker goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Pecker has a couple of punches blocked by Peso.
Pecker has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate. Peso has Pecker pressed against the cage, preventing Pecker from circling away and getting back to striking at range. A nice left hand lands by Pecker.
Pecker scores with a shot to the side of Peso's head. Peso works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard. Pecker really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Peso. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Peso postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Peso postures up in Pecker's guard and throws a big left but Pecker blocks it. Peso throwing strikes but missing. Peso throwing strikes but missing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Peso throwing strikes but missing. Peso tries to free his leg and advance position but Pecker is retaining full guard. Peso postures up.
Peso works a leg free and moves into half guard. Peso decides to return to a standing position. Peso clinches up against the cage. A nice left hand lands by Pecker.
Pecker has had enough of the clinch but Peso keeps him there for the moment. Pecker prevents the takedown attempt.
Peso tightens his grip and picks Pecker up, before dumping him to the ground. Pecker manages to land in guard. Peso chips away with some ground and pound. Peso is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Peso stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pecker swivels though and keeps the full guard. Peso is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Peso has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pecker has momentary wrist control but Peso slips an elbow through the middle. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Peso postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Peso thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. This has been an exciting period of action! Peso throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Peso throws a big right hand that misses. Peso pushing down on Pecker's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Peso thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pecker's head. Pecker trying to control but Peso postures up.
Peso thows a huge punch but Pecker dodges it nicely.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Peso is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Pecker is just riding it out for now. Peso eventually gives up the hold. Peso stands up and beckons Pecker to join him on the feet. Nice uppercut lands for Pecker. That snapped Peso's head back.
Peso tries to clinch but Pecker moves away and Pecker counters with a nice uppercut. Peso bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Pecker's head backwards. Peso wants to clinch up but Pecker keeps it at a distance. Pecker follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land. Peso moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
It looks like Wood Pecker has been cut. Peso moves to clinch but Pecker breaks away and Pecker counters with a lovely straight right hand! Peso on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Pecker. Pecker obviously looking to wear him down.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Peso tries to close the distance and clinch but Pecker swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Peso with a lazy takedown attempt and Pecker counters with a thumping low kick. Peso moves into the clinch successfully.
Pecker gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Peso.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Johnny Peso. That's going to take a lot out of him. Pecker is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Peso is keeping busy. Peso has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Pecker clear over his head and slammed him to the mat! Pecker trying to get back to his feet but Peso is in full control for now. Peso is cranking Pecker's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Pecker! He's tightened the choke and Pecker is tapping out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Johnny Peso!
