The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Summer Carpenter and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Velasquez falls off balance throwing a combination

and Rodrigo Nogueira counters with a shoot takedown. Velasquez fights it but they end up in guard.
Rodrigo Nogueira is looking to work some ground and pound but Velasquez has wrist control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Velasquez lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Rodrigo Nogueira is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Velasquez is aware though and is defending well.

Rodrigo Nogueira working for a triangle but Velasquez defends it easily.

Rodrigo Nogueira has his foot on Velasquez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Velasquez works his way back into a safe position though.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rodrigo Nogueira has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Velasquez pushes down on Rodrigo Nogueira's leg and manages to get into half guard.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Velasquez connects with a nice short shot to Rodrigo Nogueira's temple.

Velasquez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rodrigo Nogueira keeps working.
Velasquez working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Velasquez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Rodrigo Nogueira is just riding it out for now. Velasquez eventually gives up the hold.
Rodrigo Nogueira is looking for a sweep. Velasquez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

A relieved looking Cain Velasquez thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
