The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Valdez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Valdez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Valdez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Valdez is trying to get an arm triangle but Roman is defending well. Valdez is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Roman has escaped the position, nice work there. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Roman can do anything to dispel that myth. Valdez trying to control the action but Roman is working from the bottom. Valdez is really struggling to control Roman but he's trying to hold on to the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Roman is trying to improve his position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Valdez tries for a kimura but Roman is defending well. Valdez is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Roman knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Valdez goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Roman rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Valdez's guard! Nice work there by Roman! Roman sitting in guard, not really doing much. Roman really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Valdez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Valdez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Roman trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Roman is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Roman forces his way into half guard. Valdez wants to control but Roman is keeping busy and won't allow it. Roman is taking a breather. Valdez says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Roman wants to pass to mount but Valdez is defending the position. Roman is nestled in close to Valdez, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Valdez trying to control here.
Roman controlling the pace. Roman looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Valdez with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Valdez trying to control but Roman postures up.
Valdez slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Roman stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Valdez swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Roman tries to free his leg and advance position but Valdez is retaining full guard. Roman avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Valdez has his foot on Roman's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Roman works his way back into a safe position though. Roman pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Valdez is keeping the position for now. Valdez looking to control.
Roman stands up from Valdez's guard - Roman perhaps looking for a knockout. Roman gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Valdez to score an easy takedown into full guard. Valdez trying to control the position from guard on top but Roman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Roman is pulling down on Valdez's head. It's preventing any offense from Valdez, at least for the moment. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Valdez dives in and scores a takedown into Roman's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Valdez forces his way into half guard. Valdez looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Valdez is looking for a kimura here.
Valdez stalling away here and it's allowed Roman to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Roman is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Valdez tries to get to full guard but Roman has control of the leg. Roman working the head and body with strikes. Valdez is trying to control but can't.

Roman lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Roman uses his free foot to push down on Valdez's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Valdez. Roman has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Roman raining down hammerfists from mount. Roman sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Valdez tries to lock up and control but Roman gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Valdez is trying desperately to improve position. Roman lands a big elbow. Valdez is in all sorts of trouble here.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Valdez manages to regain half guard. Good work. Roman is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Valdez doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Roman. Roman trying to pass the guard but Valdez defending well. Roman takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Roman seems to be working for a kimura but Valdez defends the submission attempt. Roman lands strikes from half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Dante Gael Roman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!
Valdez closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Roman to the mat! Roman manages to get full guard. Roman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Roman looking to hit a scissor sweep but Valdez is one step ahead there. Valdez looking to sit in guard and control but Roman gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Valdez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Roman can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Roman lands a couple of elbows. Valdez looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Roman is defending well. Valdez quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Roman has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Valdez celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
