Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeremy Welch!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, AJ Heid!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, George Francis and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Heid throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Welch's waist but Welch gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Heid off to one side.
Welch feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Heid's calf.
Welch lands with an overhand left.
Welch scores with a three punch combo!

Heid scores a takedown into full mount!
Heid prevents Welch from getting the reversal.
Heid mounts Welch! Really nice guard pass there!
Welch is controlling an arm, preventing Heid from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Heid with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Welch flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
Welch knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Heid on the ground.

Heid working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

Heid looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Welch throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Welch swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.

Heid blocks Welch's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.

Heid is going olschool here, as he tries to force Welch to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Welch shrugs it off.
Welch bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Heid manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Welch manages to get himself to full guard.
Heid looks gassed!
Welch wants to stand up but Heid is controlling him.

Welch throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Welch is looking to stand up but Heid isn't so interested in that idea.
Heid pushing down on Welch's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Welch is on the bottom, trying to hold on to half guard. He's throwing a few small shots here, to keep his opponent honest.

Heid is looking for a kimura here.
Heid passes to side control.

Heid looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Welch is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Heid thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Welch is looking to regain half guard here but Heid keeps moving and retains side control.
Welch pushes Heid away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Heid gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Heid passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Welch!

Heid is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Welch can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Heid is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Welch has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Heid is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Welch is surviving well by controlling Heid's body position as best he can.
Welch can't escape the position.
Welch has given up his back.
Heid keeps control of the position as Welch tries to break free.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Heid is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Welch with him. Welch is trying to defend but Heid has an arm under the chin now! Welch grimaces and is forced to tap out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:32 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). AJ Heid!
