Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
15 - 12 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Tetsuya Tate! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
11 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Thiago Azevedo! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Dmitry Maklakov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Azevedo misses with a double jab.
Azevedo throws a leg kick but Tate sees it coming and checks it nicely. Tate appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Azevedo tries a low kick but Tate avoids it. A head kick misses from Azevedo. Tate scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Tate is keen to just control but Azevedo is a slippery customer. Azevedo is looking for a sweep. Tate is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Azevedo is staying active underneath Tate, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Tate wants to pass to mount but Azevedo is defending the position. That's two minutes gone in the round. Tate stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Azevedo swivels though and keeps the full guard. Tate controlling from the top position. Azevedo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Tate's corner is telling him to maintain position. Tate preventing the sweep. Tate trying to control the position from guard on top but Azevedo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Tate won't allow Azevedo to sweep him here. Azevedo working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Tate doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Tate manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Tate sitting in guard, not really doing much.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Tate tries to free his leg and advance position but Azevedo is retaining full guard. Tate won't allow Azevedo to sweep him here. Tate wants to control from the top but Azevedo keeps moving. Azevedo tries to land a sweep but no joy. Azevedo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Tate gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Tate wants to control from the top but Azevedo keeps moving. Azevedo has an active guard here but Tate has managed to pass into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Azevedo tries to get to full guard but Tate has control of the leg. Tate is controlling the pace.
Tate is pressing down on Azevedo's thigh, looking to free his foot. Azevedo is holding on for now. Azevedo slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Tate trying to control the position from guard on top but Azevedo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Azevedo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Azevedo manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Tate manages to get himself to full guard.

That was a close round but I would say that Tetsuya Tate will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Azevedo throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Tate's head. Azevedo shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Azevedo shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Thiago Azevedo has got the better of the ground game so far. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Tate holds on and takes a little breather. Azevedo drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Tate manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Azevedo has Tate in his guard.

Tate slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Tate wants to control from the top but Azevedo keeps moving. Azevedo bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Tate's guard.

Tate stacks Azevedo on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Tate! Tate trying to control the action but Azevedo is working from the bottom. Tate staying calm. Tate has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Azevedo manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Tate perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Tate is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Tate looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Tate! Azevedo is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Tate off and has taken his back! Tate defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Azevedo's arms. Azevedo takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Tate wants to escape the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Azevedo is trying to stick to Tate's back but Tate is turning into Azevedo. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Azevedo's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Tate.
