0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Hugo Pontes! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Viktor Lagutenko and Aleksandr Martynov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pontes misses with a jab, cross combination.
Franklin tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Pontes manages to circle out of the way. Pontes throws a wild combination but nothing lands. The fighters circle momentarily. Pontes darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch. Franklin really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. and Franklin counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Pontes works over Franklin's head and body with a nice combination. Pontes connects with a looping right hand.
Franklin takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. This has been an exciting period of action! Franklin dives in for a single leg takedown but Pontes sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Franklin shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Pontes defends it nicely. Franklin closes the distance and clinches up with Pontes, looking for a takedown. Franklin pushes Pontes against the cage but Pontes circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Pontes bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Franklin's head. A combination from Pontes does no damage. It looked like Franklin was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit. Pontes misses with a double jab.

Franklin shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Pontes but Pontes pushes him off and we're back to square one. Pontes feints a jab promting Franklin to slip. Pontes then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Franklin slips again and ducks right into an uppercut. Pontes has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Franklin showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Pontes.
Franklin scores with a takedown into Pontes's guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Franklin slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Franklin takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Franklin wants to take a breather but Pontes is having none of it. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pontes can do anything to dispel that myth. Franklin throwing shots but Pontes is blocking nicely. Franklin seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pontes does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Franklin is defended easily by Pontes. A little jabbing left from Pontes on the counter but it doesn't find it's target. Pontes slaps away a takedown attempt from Franklin, before circling back to the center of the mat. Pontes tries to counter with a clinch but Franklin shakes him off and moves away. Franklin slips a jab and a cross from Pontes.

Franklin eats them both and turns towards Pontes to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo. Pontes takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Franklin shoots for a takedown but Pontes saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Pontes throws a counter combo. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chris Franklin. That's going to take a lot out of him. Pontes connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Franklin fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Pontes might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable. A combination from Pontes does no damage.
