Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Balboa! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Joe Calzaghez! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Tiny Johnson and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Balboa shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Balboa showed some decent athleticism there. Balboa keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Calzaghez looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Calzaghez punching from the bottom.
Calzaghez keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Balboa sitting and controlling from the half guard. Calzaghez wants to control but Balboa is keeping busy and won't allow it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Balboa decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up. Balboa attempts a low kick but it misses it's target. Calzaghez uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Balboa.
Balboa misses with a takedown attempt - Calzaghez sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Balboa looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Balboa is breathing heavily. Balboa trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Calzaghez thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage. Calzaghez preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Calzaghez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Balboa doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Balboa manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Balboa trying to control the position from guard on top but Calzaghez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Calzaghez is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Balboa gets to his feet. Calzaghez looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Balboa decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Calzaghez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Balboa is taking a breather. Calzaghez says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Balboa decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet. Balboa gets a takedown into half guard. Balboa is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Balboa shoots in and bounces Calzaghez off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Balboa is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Calzaghez looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Balboa is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Balboa gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jack Balboa dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Calzaghez with a poor takedown and Balboa counters with a nice double leg into side control. Calzaghez won't be happy with that. Balboa controls the position from side control. Calzaghez takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. Balboa grinds an elbow into Calzaghez's temple. Calzaghez bucks up and tries to throw Balboa off but instead Balboa has got his back! I would not like to be Calzaghez right now.
Balboa lands punches and elbows. Balboa is working hard for the rear naked choke here.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Balboa landing with strikes. Jack Balboa overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Balboa gets his hands free as Calzaghez looks to control. I really don't envy Calzaghez right now.
Calzaghez is trying to get back to his feet but Balboa has full control of the position and if anything, Calzaghez has just worked his way into a worse spot. Balboa punishes Calzaghez with strikes from the back mount. Balboa is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish. Balboa punishes Calzaghez with strikes from the back mount. Calzaghez trying to control the hands but Balboa won't let him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Calzaghez is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Balboa.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Balboa has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Calzaghez's body.
Calzaghez manages to stand up with Balboa still on his back. Eventually Balboa drops to his feet and we're back in the standing position. Calzaghez with a lazy takedown attempt and Balboa counters with a single leg into guard. Calzaghez didn't expect that. Calzaghez keeping moving, preventing Balboa from controlling successfully. Balboa wants to pass the guard but Calzaghez is keeping the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Balboa prevents Calzaghez from getting back to his feet. Balboa content to stall in guard here. Calzaghez is looking for a triangle here but Balboa uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
You can see the frustration on Calzaghez's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Balboa working the head with strikes. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jack Balboa dominated that second round. That's time! Balboa's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!
Balboa has Calzaghez up against the cage in a clinch.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch. Calzaghez tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Balboa smiles and moves away.
Balboa has managed to clinch.
Balboa lands a hook that snaps the head of Calzaghez backwards. Balboa breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Calzaghez misses with a double jab.
Calzaghez on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Balboa. Balboa obviously looking to wear him down.
Jack Balboa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Balboa shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. Balboa controlling the position easily from mount. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Balboa fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
That's one minute gone in the round. Balboa controlling the pace for now. Balboa lands a heavy elbow. Balboa manages to capitalize on a mistake by Calzaghez to take his back! Balboa landing with strikes. Calzaghez fending off the submission attempt from Balboa. Calzaghez trying to control the position but Balboa manages to sink in the hooks. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Balboa is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Balboa gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Balboa gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Balboa apologises and we restart here on the feet.
Balboa shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Balboa controlling the action here. Calzaghez is trying to control but can't.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Balboa is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Balboa blocks the strikes from Calzaghez.
The fighters are battling for position here. Calzaghez manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Calzaghez keeping moving, preventing Balboa from controlling successfully. Calzaghez wants to stand and escape but Balboa is having none of it. Balboa stands up and waves to Calzaghez to follow him. Balboa closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Calzaghez to the mat! Calzaghez manages to get full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Balboa wants to control from the top but Calzaghez keeps moving. Balboa stands up from Calzaghez's guard - Balboa perhaps looking for a knockout. Balboa shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Calzaghez's guard. Joe Calzaghez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Balboa wants to pass the guard but Calzaghez is keeping the position. Calzaghez wants to stand up but Balboa is controlling him. Balboa thows a big elbow that misses.
And that's the end of the fight! Jack Balboa showed his dominance in that final round. Well Balboa has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
