Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Leif Eirikson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kalle Kivipelto! The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Alan Glass and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Eirikson misses with a straight right. Kivipelto connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Eirikson momentarily.
Kivipelto throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. It looked like Eirikson was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Kivipelto. Kivipelto misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Eirikson.
Eirikson is looking to counter with a shot to the body. Kivipelto thows a left - swing and a miss! It looked like Eirikson wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Kivipelto throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Kivipelto shoots in for a takedown but Eirikson shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Eirikson seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter. Eirikson takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kivipelto is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
It looks like Leif Eirikson has been cut. Kivipelto misses with a takedown attempt enabling Eirikson to counter with a crisp jab. Kivipelto thuds his right hand into Eirikson's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Eirikson keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Kalle Kivipelto seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kivipelto ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Eirikson moves away. Kivipelto misses the shot to the body. Kivipelto lands a body shot.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Kivipelto. A quick step to the side and Eirikson tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect. Leif Eirikson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kalle Kivipelto. Kivipelto connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son. Kivipelto tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Eirikson defends well and Kivipelto ends up having to push Eirikson into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Kivipelto changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Eirikson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Sloppy strikes there by Kivipelto. Kivipelto is chipping away with strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kivipelto postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Eirikson is trying to get back to his feet. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Kivipelto working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Kivipelto postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Eirikson is not content to let Kivipelto control the position. Kivipelto working the body and head with strikes. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Kivipelto looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Eirikson is avoiding damage well.
Eirikson wants to get back to his feet. Eirikson managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Kivipelto.
Eirikson is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Kivipelto is controlling him well. Kivipelto wants to control but Eirikson is keeping him busy. Eirikson tries to escape but Kivipelto is in control. Kivipelto is working Eirikson over with some ground and pound from side control.
Eirikson is rocked! Kivipelto in side control here. He's dropped a big elbow there and Eirikson looks hurt! Oh, he is hurt! Kivipelto turns on the heat and pounds him out for a TKO victory! Good killer instinct there!
