PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Skip Blonco (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derek Duggin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Duggin comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Can't Be Touched kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Skip Blonco!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Derek Duggin!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Trevor Gratis and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck for Duggin with that takedown attempt.
Blonco lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Blonco fails with the takedown.
Duggin shoots and misses
and Blonco counters with a leg kick.
Blonco shoots in but Duggin avoids the takedown attempt easily.

and Duggin counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Skip Blonco. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Duggin is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Blonco might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Duggin thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Duggin distracts Blonco with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Blonco darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Duggin wants to control but Blonco is keeping busy.
Duggin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Duggin is staying active underneath Blonco, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Blonco wants to stand up but Duggin has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Duggin trying to hold on to Blonco's head to control him but Blonco postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Blonco seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Duggin does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Duggin counters with a takedown into side control.
Blonco is breathing heavily.

Duggin wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Blonco, who protects the arm well.

Duggin decides to stand back up. Duggin steps back and let's Blonco get back to his feet.
Skip Blonco seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Duggin misses with an uppercut. Blonco saw that one coming.
No luck for Blonco with that takedown attempt.

Blonco shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Duggin has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Blonco off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Nice takedown defense from Duggin. No joy for Blonco on that attempt.

Duggin seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Duggin is keen to just control but Blonco is a slippery customer.

Duggin thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Blonco is looking to escape.
Duggin not doing much here.
Blonco tries to kick Duggin off but Duggin keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Duggin moves nicely into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Duggin has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

and Blonco counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Duggin's guard now.
Blonco would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Derek Duggin dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Blonco takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Duggin throws a nice head kick!

Duggin is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Blonco off and has taken his back!
Duggin has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Duggin tries to get the hooks in deep but Blonco pushed the leg off.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Blonco rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Duggin is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Blonco defends it well.

Duggin throwing shots but Blonco is blocking nicely.
Duggin is keen to just control but Blonco is a slippery customer.
Duggin is thwarting Blonco's attempts to control the position.
Duggin moves into full mount! Blonco won't be happy about that!
Duggin prevents Blonco from getting the reversal.
Duggin tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Let's hope that Duggin has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Duggin lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Blonco is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Blonco's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Duggin controlling the position easily from mount.
Duggin wants to control the pace but Blonco is squirming around nicely.
Duggin scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Blonco?

Duggin is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Blonco has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Blonco!

Duggin is looking for a triangle but Blonco pushes his legs off easily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Blonco postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Duggin thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Duggin lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Blonco!
BOOM! Duggin connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Blonco is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Skip Blonco will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Duggin throws a head kick but Blonco moves out of range.
Blonco tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Duggin swivels and escapes.
A solid leg kick lands there for Blonco.
Duggin misses with a few strikes there.

Blonco is trying to stand up.
Duggin is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Blonco can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Blonco tries to hold on but Duggin postures up.

Blonco manages to regain half guard. Good work.

Duggin postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Blonco to stand up.

Duggin looks to clinch

and Blonco counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Duggin is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Blonco's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Blonco's back!
Duggin lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.
Duggin tries to keep control of the position but Blonco is staying busy.
Duggin has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Blonco's body.

Blonco turns into Duggin and is now in his guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Duggin is on top in guard.
Duggin prevents Blonco from getting back to his feet.

Blonco controls Duggin momentarily but Duggin frees himself.

Blonco pushes Duggin off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Blonco dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Duggin. That did some damage!
Blonco closes this distance looking for a takedown but Duggin circles away.
Duggin works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Blonco moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Duggin clinches up against the cage.

Blonco is fighting off a takedown attempt but Duggin is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Blonco to the mat. Blonco regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Blonco wants to stand but Duggin is controlling the position.

Blonco manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Duggin manages to get himself to full guard.
Blonco thows a big elbow that misses.
Duggin is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Duggin is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Derek Duggin.
Well Duggin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
