PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Witold Gombrowicz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Valery Makarev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gombrowicz kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Face The Pain. Makarev has chosen Russian National Anthem as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Witold Gombrowicz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Valery Makarev!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Makarev gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Gombrowicz slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
We've been hearing that Gombrowicz has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Gombrowicz's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gombrowicz is standing up over Makarev. Makarev looks to escape but Gombrowicz dives into side control.

Gombrowicz in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Gombrowicz seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Makarev for as long as he can get away with.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Makarev wants to control but Gombrowicz postures up.
Makarev might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Gombrowicz haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Makarev is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Makarev can't do much from the bottom here.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Makarev is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Gombrowicz shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Makarev napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Gombrowicz content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Makarev struggling a bit here.
Makarev tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gombrowicz wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gombrowicz is staying tight to Makarev's torso, preventing him from escaping.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Makarev scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Valery Makarev seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Makarev is wriggling around but Gombrowicz manages to pass to half guard.

Makarev tries to kick Gombrowicz off but Gombrowicz keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gombrowicz prevents Makarev from improving his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Makarev can do anything to dispel that myth.

Makarev is trying to get back to full guard.
Gombrowicz trying to control the pace.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Makarev wants to control but Gombrowicz passes into side.
Gombrowicz controls the position from side control.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Gombrowicz has a takedown stuffed.
Witold Gombrowicz is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Makarev tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Gombrowicz manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Gombrowicz closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Makarev's guard.
Gombrowicz is standing up over Makarev. Makarev looks to escape but Gombrowicz dives into side control.

You can see the frustration on Makarev's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Makarev is trying to escape the position but Gombrowicz is controlling the position.
Gombrowicz is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Makarev can do to turn this around?

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Makarev misses with a jab to the body
and Gombrowicz counters with a stiff right hand.
Makarev throws a series of punches but Gombrowicz avoids them all with ease.

Gombrowicz shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Makarev wants to control but Gombrowicz passes into side.
Makarev is trying to improve his position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Makarev is being controlled here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gombrowicz has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Makarev can't do much from the bottom here.
Gombrowicz moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Makarev is looking to reverse the position.
Valery Makarev has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Gombrowicz is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Makarev's shoulder. That is not cool.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Makarev is trying to control Gombrowicz's posture but Gombrowicz avoids it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Makarev gets caught napping as Gombrowicz dives in and scores a takedown. Makarev manages to retain guard.
Makarev is trying to hold Gombrowicz in close to prevent damage but Gombrowicz has managed to pass into half guard.
Gombrowicz is figuring out what he wants to do next.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Gombrowicz.
Makarev is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Gombrowicz jumps into side control!
Makarev tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gombrowicz is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Makarev's shoulder. That is not cool.

Makarev is trying to control Gombrowicz's posture but Gombrowicz avoids it.

And that's the end of the fight!
Witold Gombrowicz showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gombrowicz, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
