PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jewel Bowman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yuri Gertsin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Yuri Gertsin will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jewel Bowman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Yuri Gertsin!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Vladimir Khabensky and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gertsin falls off balance throwing a combination

and Bowman counters with a single leg into guard. Gertsin didn't expect that.
Bowman lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Bowman throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Gertsin works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Gertsin controls Bowman momentarily but Bowman frees himself.

Bowman missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Gertsin tries to land a sweep but no joy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Bowman makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Bowman is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Gertsin is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Gertsin has escaped and now he's on top!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gertsin would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Gertsin trying to stand up but can't free himself from Bowman's guard.
Bowman bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gertsin's guard.

Gertsin tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Bowman distracts Gertsin with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Bowman might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gertsin looking to control.
Bowman knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gertsin on the ground.
Gertsin striking off his back but it's not causing Bowman any problems.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Bowman accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Bowman postures up and lands a big shot to Gertsin's brow.
Gertsin is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Gertsin wants to sweep but no luck.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Bowman shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Gertsin's guard.
Gertsin wants to get back to his feet but Bowman passes into half guard.

Bowman scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Gertsin works his way to full guard. Good work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bowman works over Gertsin with some ground and pound from guard.

Gertsin working for a triangle but Bowman defends it easily.
Bowman could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Bowman postures up in Gertsin's guard and throws a big left but Gertsin blocks it.
Bowman trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Gertsin is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Bowman postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Gertsin is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Bowman, into his guard.

Bowman keeping moving, preventing Gertsin from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jewel Bowman dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Gertsin moves in looking to clinch but Bowman pushes him off.
Bowman shoots for a takedown but Gertsin saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Sloppy strikes from Gertsin. Those never looked like landing.
Bowman tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Gertsin swivels and escapes.

Gertsin pushes Bowman up against the cage in a clinch.
Gertsin tries to break the clinch but Bowman is controlling the position.
Bowman is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Gertsin to keep the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jewel Bowman. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Bowman successfully pulls guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bowman has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Gertsin has passed into side control.

Bowman holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Gertsin tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

Gertsin wants to control the pace but Bowman is squirming around nicely.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Bowman gets back to half guard.
Gertsin tries to stand and escape but Bowman is controlling the position.

Gertsin seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bowman does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Yuri Gertsin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Bowman looks for the body kick but Gertsin saw that one coming.
Gertsin is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Bowman.

Gertsin looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Bowman is fending him off so far but Gertsin persists. Nope, Bowman circles away and we're back to standing.

Gertsin shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bowman but Bowman pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Jewel Bowman has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yuri Gertsin.

Yuri Gertsin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Bowman closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Gertsin quickly recovers to half guard.

Bowman keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Gertsin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Bowman has a takedown stuffed.
Gertsin shoots in looking for a takedown. Bowman tries to sprawl out of it but Gertsin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Bowman manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
As Gertsin looks to move away, Bowman throws a big counter combo but Gertsin just gets out of the way.
Bowman darts in looking for a takedown but Gertsin gets double underhooks and turns Bowman into the cage.
Gertsin fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Jewel Bowman is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Bowman goes for a double leg but Gertsin avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Gertsin continues to drive forward.

Gertsin throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Bowman counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Bowman seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Gertsin wants to get back to his feet.
Bowman winds up and cracks Gertsin with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Bowman working over Gertsin with some ground and pound. Gertsin looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Bowman lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Gertsin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Jewel Bowman showed his dominance in that final round.
