Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Renol Govan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Gattis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Renol Govan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, James Gattis!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Jeff Smith and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Govan getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Govan closes the distance but Gattis moves to the side
and Gattis counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Gattis uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Govan.
Govan works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Gattis throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Gattis rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Govan moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Govan throws an off balance right hand
and Gattis counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
A jab from Govan misses.
Govan swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Govan scores with a three punch combo!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Gattis drives through and clinches with Govan against the cage.
Govan on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Gattis.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Govan.
Gattis's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Govan has a couple of punches blocked by Gattis.

Gattis breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Govan swinging wildly here.
Govan is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Gattis.
Govan tries to clinch there but Gattis circles away.
Gattis throws a sloppy head kick and Govan moves out of range easily.
Gattis has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Govan lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Gattis scores with the left hand. Govan knows he should have avoided that one.
Govan throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Gattis makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Govan connects with a nice looking jab.
Gattis has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Gattis there as he acknowledges the shot.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Gattis is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.

It looks like Renol Govan has been cut.

Govan misses with a jab, cross combination.
Renol Govan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Gattis moves into the clinch successfully.
Gattis blocking some punches.

Gattis breaks the clinch.
Govan tries to bum rush Gattis with a series of wild strikes but Gattis uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Renol Govan is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
The fighters circling - Govan throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Govan is breathing heavily.
A decent looking cross lands there for Govan.

Gattis closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Govan did well to prevent Gattis getting side control.
Gattis seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

and Gattis counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

and Gattis counters with a one-two to the body.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Gattis buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Gattis darts in and clinches Govan up against the cage.

Both fighters circling a little - Gattis finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

Gattis rushes Govan and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Gattis is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.
Gattis lands a body punch.

Gattis pulls guard successfully.

Gattis had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Govan defends it easily.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gattis is on top in guard.

The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Gattis seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Govan blocks a head kick by Gattis.
Govan swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Govan takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Govan tries to close the distance and clinch up but Gattis swats him away and circles back towards the center.
James Gattis is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

James Gattis seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Gattis has closed the distance and engaged Govan in a clinch.
Gattis has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Gattis breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A combination from Govan does no damage.
Govan tries to clinch there but Gattis circles away.
Govan throws a poor cross that misses

and Gattis counters with a shoot takedown. Govan fights it but they end up in guard.
Govan is looking to stand up but Gattis isn't so interested in that idea.
Gattis throws a big elbow that misses.
Gattis postures up in Govan's guard and throws a big left but Govan blocks it.

Gattis trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Gattis gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Gattis takes the fight into the clinch.
Gattis tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Govan avoids it.

Govan tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Gattis's elbow.

Gattis bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Gattis is putting a hurting on Govan here, landing some big shots from side control.

Govan avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Gattis.

Gattis has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Gattis misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

James Gattis showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's time! Govan's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!


Gattis looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Govan swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Gattis working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Govan's head.
Gattis lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Gattis is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Govan can't keep his opponent in guard - Gattis advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Govan wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Gattis manages to pass to side control.

Let's hope that Gattis has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Gattis wants to work for an arm triangle but Govan is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Gattis looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Govan!

Gattis decides to stand back up. Gattis steps back and let's Govan get back to his feet.

Gattis moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.

Govan knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gattis on the ground.

Gattis tries to free his leg and advance position but Govan is retaining full guard.

Gattis stands and steps away. Govan gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Govan misses with a punch on the inside.
Gattis connects with a nasty looking knee right to Govan's face.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Gattis successfully pulls guard.

Gattis has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Govan has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

And that's the end of the fight!
James Gattis comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gattis has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
