Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Maia! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Chris Rocketes! The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Paulo Santos and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Maia decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Rocketes is trying to get back to full guard. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Maia passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Rocketes! Maia sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! Maia tries to control but Rocketes wriggling away. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Maia punching from mount but Rocketes doing a good job of avoiding damage. Maia lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Maia is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Rocketes can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Rocketes is squirming around, avoiding Maia's attempts to control the action. Rocketes squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Maia has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Maia working for a submission but Rocketes is keeping him at bay. Rocketes tries to get back to half guard but can't. Rocketes is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Maia looking to finish Rocketes with some ground and pound. This is bad for Rocketes! Rocketes wants to get back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rocketes regains half guard. Maia working over Rocketes with some ground and pound. Rocketes looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Maia is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Rocketes has one foot on Maia's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Rocketes doesn't succeed with the takedown and Maia counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Rocketes wants to get back to his feet.
Rocketes avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Maia. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Rocketes is trying to stand.
Rocketes looks gassed! Maia is trying for a kimura here. Rocketes looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Maia wins by kimura!
