PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rex Silva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Hoppus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rex Silva!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mark Hoppus!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, George Francis and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Silva tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Silva shoots in for a double leg but Hoppus sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Hoppus throws a quick inside leg kick.
Hoppus throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Silva stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Silva is breathing heavily.
Silva wants to clinch.
Silva tries to clinch there but Hoppus circles away.
Silva avoids the body shot from Hoppus.
Silva fails in his attempt to clinch.
A shot to de liver by Hoppus. Beautiful body shot.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Hoppus closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Hoppus lands in his opponent's guard.

Hoppus stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Hoppus bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Hoppus tries to move into full mount but can't pass Silva's legs.

Hoppus is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Silva knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Hoppus decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Hoppus moves into the clinch successfully.
Silva could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Hoppus has picked Silva up - he's going for a ride! Hoppus dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

Hoppus is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Hoppus is tying to control. Silva wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Hoppus seems to be working for a kimura but Silva defends the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hoppus is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Silva still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Silva has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

Hoppus tries to improve his position but instead Silva has taken his back!

Hoppus controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.
You can see the frustration on Hoppus's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hoppus is trying to stand back up.
Silva keeps control of the position as Hoppus tries to break free.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Silva tries to keep control of the position but Hoppus is staying busy.
What can Hoppus do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Hoppus is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mark Hoppus dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Silva with a poor takedown
and Hoppus counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Silva is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Hoppus has closed the distance and engaged Silva in a clinch.
Silva takes an elbow to the forehead.


It looks like Rex Silva has been cut.
Silva is looking to control Hoppus's arms but Hoppus gets an underhook and turns him. Now Silva has his back to the cage.
Hoppus tries to pull guard but Silva holds him up against the cage and eventually Hoppus drops back down to his feet.
Hoppus is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Silva pulls him back up using the underhooks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hoppus is trying to drag Silva to the mat but Silva just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Rex Silva has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mark Hoppus.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Hoppus has Silva pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Silva manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Hoppus is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Silva can't fight it off and eventually Hoppus manages to take the fight to the floor. Silva looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Hoppus is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Silva is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Silva has escaped and now he's on top!
Silva might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Hoppus working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Silva doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Silva manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hoppus slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Hoppus isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Silva stacks Hoppus on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Silva!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Mark Hoppus will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The cut man is working on Rex Silva's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Hoppus closes this distance looking for a takedown but Silva circles away.
A nice inside leg kick there by Hoppus. That's going to slow Silva down.
Hoppus has a takedown stuffed.

Hoppus rushes Silva and presses him up against the cage.
Hoppus is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Hoppus fails to pull guard.
Rex Silva has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mark Hoppus.
Hoppus throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Hoppus tries for a takedown. No joy.
Hoppus drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Silva gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Silva wants to stall.

Hoppus is trying to drag Silva to the mat but Silva just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Hoppus pulls guard successfully.

Silva gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Hoppus throws a series of punches but Silva moves out of range.

and Hoppus counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Hoppus is trying to drag Silva to the mat but Silva just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Hoppus tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Silva smiles and moves away.
No luck for Silva with that takedown attempt.

Hoppus clinches.
Hoppus goes for a takedown in the clinch but Silva prevents it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Hoppus jumps guard but Silva stands there with Hoppus around his waist. Hoppus gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Hoppus jumps guard and drags Silva to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Silva wants to control from the top but Hoppus keeps moving.
Hoppus wants to get back to his feet but Silva is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Silva avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Hoppus looking for subs off his back but Silva has passed one foot through into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Rex Silva.
Well Hoppus has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
