The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Valium wants to get back to his feet. Penn looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Valium looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Valium looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Valium is trying to stand up here but Penn is controlling him well. Valium wants to improve his position but Penn is controlling well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Valium is not content to let Penn control the position.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Penn is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Penn bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Penn lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Valium down.
Valium manages to get back to half guard. Valium misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Valium is refusing to be controlled, as Penn sits in half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Valium is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Penn pulls his head out easily. Valium looks gassed! Penn is trying to control the action in half guard but Valium is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Penn is working for a kimura but Valium is defending it quite comfortably.
Valium pushes Penn off and gets back to his feet. Penn fails to land the takedown. Penn is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Valium wants to clinch up but Penn keeps it at a distance. Penn shoots in but no luck this time. Penn shoots in for a takedown and gets it. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Valium trying to control from the bottom.
Penn tries to pass the half guard into mount. Valium knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Penn wants to advance to full mount but Valium doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead. Valium doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Valium has his foot on Penn's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Penn works his way back into a safe position though. Valium looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Penn is defending well. Valium quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Penn has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Valium celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
