PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Barry Doyle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ken Ryu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Barry Doyle!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ken Ryu!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ryu will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Ryu is trying hard to land a takedown here. Doyle sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Doyle tried to counter with a leg kick but Ryu avoided it.
Doyle stuffs the takedown.
Doyle tries to counter by clinching up but Ryu breaks away and moves out of range.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Doyle has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Ryu uses from the top position.

Doyle throws a big counter combination but Ryu scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Doyle keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Ryu is defended easily by Doyle.
Doyle is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Ryu.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Ryu tries a head kick but it misses.
Ryu shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Doyle as he avoids it easily.
Doyle stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Doyle wants it to stay on the feet.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Doyle swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Ryu jumps into guard, dragging Doyle to the mat.

Ryu has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Doyle can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Doyle is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Ryu trying to keep a closed guard but Doyle is proving a slippery customer.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Doyle postures up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Ryu changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Doyle tries to avoid it but Ryu manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Doyle to the ground. Doyle escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Ryu will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Ryu tries a head kick but it misses.

As Ryu tries to get set, Doyle tries to push him back and clinch up but Ryu manages to avoid the attempt.
Ryu will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

No joy there for Doyle, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Ryu tries for a takedown but Doyle sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Doyle seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Ken Ryu seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Doyle tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Ryu is trying to break the clinch but Doyle has him pressed against the cage.

Doyle is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ryu is controlling him.
Doyle is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Ryu stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Doyle stuffs the takedown.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Ryu.

Ryu shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Doyle pinned against the cage. Doyle gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ryu takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Ryu fails with the takedown.

Ryu closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Doyle could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ryu taking a break, stalling in the clinch.

Doyle can't get the takedown.

Ryu successfully pulls guard.
Ryu is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Ryu seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Ryu throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Doyle is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Ryu can do to turn this around?

Doyle tries to counter by clinching up but Ryu breaks away and moves out of range.
Ryu shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Ryu decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Doyle breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Doyle stuffs the takedown.
Barry Doyle is winning the standup battle so far.
Ryu shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Doyle as he jumps to the side.
Doyle is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Ryu.
Ryu slips a jab and a cross from Doyle.
Ryu doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.

Doyle gets tackled into the cage by Ryu. Ryu maintains the clinch.
Ken Ryu has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Barry Doyle is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Ryu is trying to stall.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Barry Doyle.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Doyle, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
