Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Andre Soares! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Steven Kopp! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Leandro Rodrigues and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kopp gets a takedown into half guard. Soares has hold of Kopp's hands but Kopp slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Kopp slips a nice elbow through Soares's hands, connecting with Soares's forehead. Kopp has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Soul Supremacy Rio. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. Soares actively working from the bottom here. Kopp thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Soares's head. Soares wants to improve his position but Kopp is controlling well.
Kopp takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Soares tries to roll over but Kopp keeps him under control. Soares is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Kopp scores with a couple of nice shots. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Kopp lands a nice short elbow. Kopp working over Soares with some ground and pound. Soares looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Soares moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Kopp must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Soares has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Kopp should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Soares has tightened it up now! Kopp should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
