Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Zander Givens ! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Roger Fransson! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Mauricio Rocha and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Fransson takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
It looks like Roger Fransson has been cut. Givens throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Fransson counters with a takedown into side control. Fransson trying to control the position but Givens is working away. The referee tells the fighters to keep busy. Fransson wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Givens , who protects the arm well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Givens prevents Fransson from improving position. Fransson trying to control the position but Givens is working away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fransson advances nicely into full mount. Fransson is in the full mount, landing strikes. Fransson trying to control but he's not successful this time. Poor strikes thrown by Fransson there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Fransson is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Givens has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Givens is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fransson looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Fransson working his ground and pound in the gym. Fransson working away from the top, dropping strikes. Fransson sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Givens defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Fransson. Fransson moves to back control. Fransson is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Givens knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Givens for a finish.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Givens is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet. Fransson is looking for the choke from the back position but Givens is controlling his hands well. Will Fransson go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Fransson has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Givens has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Givens knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Fransson on the ground. Fransson controlling the position well here. Givens rolled but Fransson kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Givens is in a bad position with Fransson working for a choke. Givens manages to spin nicely into guard and the danger is over for the moment. Givens postures up.
Givens got a little sloppy there for a moment and Fransson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Givens has managed to get both his arms back between Fransson's legs - danger averted. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Fransson is trying to keep Givens in close.
Givens is looking to stand up but Fransson won't let him. Givens wants to stand and escape but instead Fransson has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Fransson trying to control the position from guard on top but Givens is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Fransson drops back looking for a leg! Givens is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Givens manages to kick Fransson off! Fransson jumps back into Givens 's guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Roger Fransson dominated that round. The cut man is working on Roger Fransson's cut. That's time! Back to the action!
Givens throws a combination. Fransson tries to block but a couple of punches get through. Givens sizes up Fransson with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Fransson bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. A momentary lapse in concentration from Givens enables Fransson to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Givens manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Fransson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Fransson scoring with some ground and pound. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Fransson drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Fransson seems to have locked his on tight now - Givens screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Fransson, as he picks up the win!
