Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, James Gattis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Hugo Chavez! The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Paul Gruel and Josh West.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gattis throws a series of punches but Chavez moves out of range. Nice sprawl there from Gattis as Chavez shoots in. Chavez shoots in for a double leg but Gattis sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Gattis appears to be looking for a big counter. Chavez has managed to clinch.
Gattis gets underhooks to prevent Chavez's takedown attempt.
James Gattis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hugo Chavez. Gattis has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate. Chavez missing with knees to the body.

Gattis shoots for a takedown but Chavez saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Gattis closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gattis putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Chavez in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body. Chavez is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Good body shot from Chavez.
Gattis has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Gattis slowing the pace effectively. Chavez gets underhooks to prevent Gattis's takedown attempt.

Chavez clinches up with Gattis and pushes him back against the cage. Chavez is looking to take this one to the mat. Gattis jumps into guard, dragging Chavez to the mat.
Chavez postures up in Gattis's guard and throws a big left but Gattis blocks it. Gattis wants to stand but Chavez is controlling the position. Chavez throws an elbow that misses. Gattis uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Chavez's guard. Nice move by Gattis! Chavez controls Gattis momentarily but Gattis frees himself. Chavez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gattis doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gattis manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Chavez isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Gattis stacks Chavez on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Gattis!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gattis is looking to take a break and control but Chavez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Chavez is trying to improve his position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gattis lands some shots froms side control. Chavez struggling a bit here. Gattis decides to stand up, so the ref orders Chavez to his feet. Gattis throws a leg kick which misses Chavez's front leg but catches the back leg as Chavez tries to avoid it. Chavez shoots in looking for a takedown. Gattis tries to sprawl out of it but Chavez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Gattis manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Hugo Chavez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Chavez dives in and scores a takedown into Gattis's guard. Chavez not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Chavez postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Chavez looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Chavez preventing the sweep. Chavez stands and throws Gattis's legs to the side, diving into side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gattis is not content to let Chavez control the position. Gattis can't do much from the bottom here. Chavez looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Chavez tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Chavez has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Chavez controlling from side mount. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that James Gattis will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Chavez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Chavez seems to be working for a kimura but Gattis defends the submission attempt. Gattis wants to get back to full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Chavez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Chavez trying to control but Gattis is working from the bottom. Chavez sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Gattis's guard. Chavez is trying to work for a kimura but Gattis is defending well.
Gattis is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Chavez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gattis is just riding it out for now. Chavez eventually gives up the hold. We've been informed that Chavez has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight. Chavez is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Chavez tries to pass to full mount but Gattis defends it. Gattis is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Chavez pulls his head out easily. Chavez is controlling the pace.

Still in half guard, Chavez seems content to control. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Gattis wants to improve his position but Chavez is controlling well.

Chavez shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Gattis's guard. Gattis utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Chavez postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Gattis is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Chavez, into his guard.

Gattis ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Chavez throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Gattis was covering up waiting for the punch and Chavez finishes the takedown easily into guard. Chavez is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Gattis pulls Chavez in close to his closed guard and prevents Chavez from doing any damage or advancing position. Chavez wants to control from the top but Gattis keeps moving.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gattis is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Chavez defends well. Chavez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Chavez is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Chavez drops back, looking for a kneebar! Gattis looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Gattis looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Gattis!
Gattis stands up. Chavez shoots for a double leg takedown but Gattis sprawls well. He's pushed Chavez's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Chavez shoots for a takedown but Gattis saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Gattis feinted with a counter takedown.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gattis looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Chavez shoots in and gets a takedown into Gattis's guard. Chavez won't allow Gattis to sweep him here. Chavez drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Gattis manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Chavez has Gattis in his guard.
Chavez takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Chavez thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Chavez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gattis can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Gattis tries to free his leg and advance position but Chavez is retaining full guard.
And that's the end of the fight! James Gattis showed his dominance in that final round. I think Gattis has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
