The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Journalist tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Mayer counters with a nice double leg into side control. Mayer has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Wolves Den $200 Elite Circuits. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. You can see the frustration on Journalist's face as Mayer controls the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mayer has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Journalist tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mayer takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Let's hope that Mayer has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Journalist tries to get back to half guard but can't. Mayer lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
