PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Rogga Polis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Hunter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hunter has chosen Dance Monkey -Sage Francis as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rogga Polis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Matt Hunter!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Aleksandr Martynov and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Polis closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Polis lands in his opponent's guard.
Polis is looking to work some ground and pound but Hunter has wrist control.
Polis wants to control from the top but Hunter keeps moving.
Hunter wants to get back to his feet but Polis is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Polis with a nice head shot there.
Polis loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Hunter looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Polis lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Polis trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Hunter working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Polis doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Polis manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Polis pushes down on Hunter's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Polis not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Still in half guard, Polis seems content to control.
Polis is looking to advance position but Hunter won't allow it.
Hunter trying to control here.
Polis with the ground and pound but Hunter uses the opportunity to regain guard.

Hunter had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Polis is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Hunter Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Polis's back instead.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Polis is really stuck here.
Hunter struggling to keep hold of the position.
Polis has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Polis controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad spot.
Polis manages to reverse the position and now he's in Hunter's guard. Nice work there by Polis.
Polis looking to pass the guard.
Polis working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Hunter's head.

Hunter working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Polis.

Hunter working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Polis doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Polis manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Hunter looks gassed!
Polis is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Hunter keeping moving, preventing Polis from controlling successfully.
Polis chips away with some ground and pound.

Hunter has his foot on Polis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Polis works his way back into a safe position though.
Polis trying to control but Hunter is working from the bottom.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Hunter has momentary wrist control but Polis slips an elbow through the middle.
Polis with a flurry of punches that miss.
Polis works over Hunter with some ground and pound from guard.
Polis trying to control the position from guard on top but Hunter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Polis working some strikes from top position.
Polis with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Polis lands a couple of digs.
Polis is looking to work some ground and pound but Hunter has wrist control.
Polis wants to control from the top but Hunter keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rogga Polis dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Polis connects with a single shot there.
Polis shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hunter as he avoids it easily.

Hunter decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Polis moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Polis wants to hit a switch here but Hunter passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Polis there!
Polis wants to control but Hunter is having none of it.
Hunter misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Polis tries to hold on but Hunter pushes him away.
Hunter looking to control but Polis is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Hunter goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Polis is on top in guard.
Hunter is breathing heavily.
Polis throws a big right hand that misses.
Hunter avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Polis connects with a couple of short punches.
Polis throwing strikes but missing.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hunter working for a triangle but Polis defends it easily.
Polis is working Hunter over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Polis thuds his right hand into Hunter's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Polis finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Polis scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.

Polis throws a sloppy head kick and Hunter moves out of range easily.
Polis walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Hunter checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Hunter closes the distance and clinches.
A head punch on the inside from Polis fails to land.
Polis can't break the clinch.

Hunter tightens his grip and picks Polis up, before dumping him to the ground. Polis manages to land in guard.
Hunter passes into half guard.
Polis trying to control but Hunter postures up.

Polis is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Hunter pulls his head out easily.
Hunter passes to full mount!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hunter looking to control but Polis is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Hunter lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Polis manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Rogga Polis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Polis looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Polis tries to get to full guard but Hunter has control of the leg.
Hunter is thwarting Polis's attempts to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Hunter showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Polis fails to land the takedown.

and Hunter counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Hunter is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Hunter blocks the strikes from Polis.

Hunter is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Polis doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Hunter.

Polis looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Polis manages to get to full guard.
Polis looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Polis controls Hunter momentarily but Hunter frees himself.
Hunter has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Polis is proving hard to escape from.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Hunter postures up in Polis's guard and throws a big left but Polis blocks it.

Hunter decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Polis, up you get!
Polis works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.

Hunter shoots in and bounces Polis off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Polis tries to strike from the bottom.

Polis escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hunter gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Hunter passes Polis's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Polis is looking to improve his position.

Polis is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Hunter pulls his head out easily.
Polis tries to get to full guard but Hunter has control of the leg.
Hunter wants to take a breather but Polis is having none of it.
Hunter wants to free his trapped foot but Polis is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Polis misses with some strikes from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
A decent looking cross lands there for Polis.
Polis shoots for a double leg takedown but Hunter sprawls well. He's pushed Polis's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rogga Polis. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Hunter gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Hunter goes for a takedown attempt but Polis pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Hunter stuffs the takedown.
Hunter throws a right hand that Polis ducks under and follows up with a left that Polis also avoids with ease.
Hunter avoids a punch combination nicely.

Hunter drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Hunter drops back, looking for a kneebar! Polis looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Polis looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Polis!
Hunter is working to avoid the ground and pound but Polis connects with a decent elbow.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matt Hunter comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hunter has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
