Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Jackson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Brett Hilgers! The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Skip Squint and Summer Carpenter.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hilgers lands a jab-cross combination. Jackson tries a head kick but it misses.
Nice sprawl there from Hilgers as Jackson shoots in. John Jackson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Jackson tries to move into range but Hilgers moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand. Hilgers is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Jackson was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger. Jackson tries to clinch up. Jackson throws a series of punches but Hilgers moves out of range. Jackson avoids the head kick by Hilgers.

Jackson shoots in for a takedown but Hilgers shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Hilgers has a takedown stuffed. Jackson clinches with his opponent.
Jackson tries to pull guard but Hilgers forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Jackson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Jackson manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Hilgers on his heels. He'll look to pass Hilgers's guard now, I'm sure.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hilgers looking to hit a scissor sweep but Jackson is one step ahead there. Jackson wants to control from the top but Hilgers keeps moving. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hilgers utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Jackson wants to get up but he can't break Hilgers's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Jackson passes into half guard. Jackson is looking to take a break and control but Hilgers is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Hilgers is controlling Jackson's trapped leg to prevent Jackson from advancing to side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Hilgers is looking to control Jackson's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Hilgers avoid being mounted? Hilgers blocking the ground and pound attempt from Jackson. Jackson seems to be working for a kimura but Hilgers defends the submission attempt. Hilgers tries to roll over but Jackson keeps him under control. Jackson tries to pass the half guard into mount. Hilgers knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that John Jackson will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Hilgers stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Hilgers wants it to stay on the feet. Brett Hilgers is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Jackson nods at Hilgers to acknowledge the strikes.

Jackson is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Jackson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hilgers manages to get himself to full guard.

Jackson has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Hilgers is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Jackson.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jackson is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. Hilgers throws a strike aimed at the side of Jackson's head but Jackson avoids it well. Jackson gets back to half guard. Jackson is defending against the submission attempts here by Hilgers.

That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Hilgers stalling away here and it's allowed Jackson to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. Hilgers controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. John Jackson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Hilgers trying to control the position from guard on top but Jackson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Hilgers throws a big right hand that misses. Jackson closes the distance and clinches. Hilgers wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. John Jackson has scored more points in the clinch so far. Jackson jumps guard and drags Hilgers to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Jackson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Jackson has control of Hilgers's left arm, preventing Hilgers from doing any damage. Hilgers stands and steps away. Jackson gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
