Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gaston Avare! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Maicol Raul! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Matheus Silva and Leandro Rodrigues.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Avare gets a double leg takedown into Raul's guard. Raul working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Avare. Avare is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Avare trying to control the position from guard on top but Raul is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Avare will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Raul wants to stand and escape but Avare is having none of it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Avare drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Avare jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Raul wants to stand but Avare is controlling the position. Avare trying to control but Raul is working from the bottom.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Avare with a poor takedown and Raul counters with a series of strikes. Avare will be more careful next time no doubt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Raul misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Avare with a poor takedown and Raul counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Raul. Raul pulls guard successfully.
Avare trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Raul wants to stand but Avare is controlling the position. Avare drops back looking for a leg! Raul is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Raul manages to kick Avare off! Avare jumps back into Raul's guard. Avare thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Raul is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Raul has control of Avare's left arm, preventing Avare from doing any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Avare throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Raul wants to stand up but Avare is controlling him. Avare with a flurry of punches that miss. Avare lands a couple of elbows. Avare preventing the sweep. Avare throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Avare is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Raul is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Raul has escaped and now he's on top!
Raul must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Avare avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Raul avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Avare has his foot on Raul's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Raul works his way back into a safe position though. Raul has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Avare is proving hard to escape from. Raul is posturing up here but Avare has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Raul tries to roll out but it's too tight and Raul has to tap! Slick submission there by Avare!
