PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Julien King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Simeon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Julien King has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Julien King!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, James Simeon!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Darius Henderson and Ben Hemmingworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Simeon gets a clinch.

King escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
James Simeon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

King moves into range and clinches up with Simeon.
King connects with a knee to the head.

King breaks the clinch.

Simeon scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
King is looking to get back to is feet but Simeon passes into side control.
King definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
King is looking to reverse the position.

Simeon wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by King, who protects the arm well.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
King tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Simeon wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Simeon tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
King managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Simeon.

King tries to improve position but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
King is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Simeon asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Simeon is trying to get an arm triangle but King is defending well.
Simeon throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Simeon fails to land a wild elbow strike.
King wants to control but Simeon postures up.
Simeon is looking to take a break and control but King is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Simeon is working King over with some ground and pound from side control.
Simeon wants to lay and pray for a moment but King keeps working.
King takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Simeon throwing strikes but missing, from side control.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Simeon stands up and beckons King to his feet.

Simeon shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Simeon was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

King wants to control but Simeon postures up.
King is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Simeon takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Simeon throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing King to regain full guard.

King wants to sweep here but Simeon controlling him for the moment.

Simeon slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Simeon postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
King has control of Simeon's left arm, preventing Simeon from doing any damage.
Simeon trying to control the position from guard on top but King is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

King is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
King pulls Simeon in close to his closed guard and prevents Simeon from doing any damage or advancing position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Simeon shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Simeon was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Simeon dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

King wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Simeon is now in half guard.
King preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Simeon perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
King manages to get to full guard.
Simeon has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now King is on top in guard.

Simeon controls King momentarily but King frees himself.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Simeon pushes King off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

A momentary lapse in concentration from King enables Simeon to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. King manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Simeon postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Simeon is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Simeon trying to control the position from guard on top but King is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Simeon wants to pass the guard but King is keeping the position.

King tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Simeon throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as King works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

King throws a good cross that connects.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Simeon avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Simeon shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as King sprawls well. King wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Simeon gets slowly back to his feet.

Simeon clinches.

King pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A head kick from King lands but Simeon takes it in his stride.
King throws a sloppy head kick and Simeon moves out of range easily.

Simeon shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
King wants to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but James Simeon will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Simeon fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but King avoids it really well and circles away.
King defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Simeon.
King tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Simeon shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with King but King pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Julien King has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Simeon.

Simeon bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Simeon tries to score with some ground and pound. King controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
King wants to get back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
King gets back to half guard.
King is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Simeon's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Simeon's back!

Simeon just trying to survive but King is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
King is riding his opponent, not letting Simeon buck him off.
Simeon wants to escape the position.
King biding his time, controlling Simeon.
Simeon trying to control the hands but King won't let him.
King is looking to control Simeon but Simeon is wriggling around and keeping busy.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
King missing with punches from the back.

Simeon is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if King gets his way!

King trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
King avoiding Simeon 's attempts to control his hands.
Simeon breaks King's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
James Simeon has got the better of the ground game so far.

Simeon thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

King is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Simeon is aware though and is defending well.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Simeon's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

King has his hands on Simeon's head, controlling the position.
King wants to sweep but no luck.
Simeon postures up.
Simeon must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
King keeping moving, preventing Simeon from controlling successfully.
Julien King has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Simeon stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. King swivels though and keeps the full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Julien King showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Simeon has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
