PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tyler Burgess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shinsuke Kushida (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tyler Burgess is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tyler Burgess!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shinsuke Kushida!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Joseph Jones and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kushida misses with a straight left.
Kushida swinging wildly here.
Burgess shoots for a double leg takedown but Kushida sprawls well. He's pushed Burgess's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Kushida tries a quick counter leg kick but Burgess is wise to it.

Burgess shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Kushida manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Kushida pushes Burgess off and gets back to his feet.

Burgess looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Kushida!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kushida prevents Burgess from improving position.
Burgess trying to control the action but Kushida is working from the bottom.
Burgess fails to land a wild elbow strike.

Kushida is looking for a sweep.
Burgess has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Burgess landing strikes from the mount.
Kushida tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Burgess misses with a head shot.
Burgess avoids the attempt from Kushida to control.
Burgess trying to control but Kushida is having none of it.

Burgess lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Kushida hang on?

Burgess is looking to stand but Kushida has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Burgess breaks from Kushida's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Burgess has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Burgess is landing with some decent strikes but Kushida is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Burgess thowing shots but they're missing.
Burgess throws a strike there. Kushida manages to avoid it well and slips a leg under to get to half guard.
Burgess lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Burgess is trying to control the action in half guard but Kushida is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Burgess wants to work for an arm triangle but Kushida is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Kushida tries to get to full guard but Burgess has control of the leg.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Burgess looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Kushida with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Burgess throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Burgess is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Burgess is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tyler Burgess dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Burgess takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Burgess.

and Kushida counters with a stiff right hand.
Kushida connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Burgess momentarily.

Kushida looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tyler Burgess. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kushida lands with an uppercut that bounces Burgess off the cage and back into range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice sprawl there from Kushida as Burgess shoots in.
Kushida throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Burgess shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kushida defends it nicely.

Kushida lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Burgess shoots in looking for a takedown but Kushida manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Burgess's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Kushida connects with a nice looking jab.
Kushida fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Burgess takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.


It looks like Tyler Burgess has been cut.

Burgess feints and as Kushida raises his hands in defense, Burgess changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Kushida is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Burgess stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kushida swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kushida wants to sweep but no luck.

Burgess postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Burgess throws a big right hand that misses.
Burgess sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Kushida's guard.
Kushida makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Kushida.
Burgess throws an elbow that misses. Kushida uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Burgess's guard. Nice move by Kushida!


Burgess working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kushida doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kushida manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Kushida won't allow Burgess to get back to his feet.
Kushida tries to free his leg and advance position but Burgess is retaining full guard.

Kushida avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Burgess seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Burgess wants to improve his position but instead Kushida has moved into half guard.
Kushida passes into side control, despite Burgess's attempt to control the position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Kushida content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Kushida taking a break here but Burgess is having none of it and regains half guard.
Burgess slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Burgess looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Shinsuke Kushida showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's time! Burgess's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

and Burgess counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Kushida!

Kushida sneaks out the side door and pushes Burgess away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Burgess wants to control from the top but Kushida keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kushida stuffs the takedown attempt from Burgess. Burgess gets slowly back to his feet.
Kushida swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.

Burgess changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kushida tries to avoid it but Burgess manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kushida to the ground. Kushida escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Horrible takedown attempt by Burgess or perhaps it was just good defense by Kushida, which made it look bad.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tyler Burgess. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Burgess uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Kushida.
Kushida tries to work over Burgess's front leg with a kick but Burgess checks it.
Burgess shoots in for a takedown but Kushida shows good takedown defense.
Kushida is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Burgess with a body shot.
Shinsuke Kushida seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Burgess shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kushida makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Kushida.

Burgess trying to control the position from guard on top but Kushida is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Burgess wants to pass the guard but Kushida is keeping the position.
Kushida keeping moving, preventing Burgess from controlling successfully.
Kushida not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Burgess advances to half guard.
Tyler Burgess overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Burgess is keen to just control but Kushida is a slippery customer.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kushida tries to get to full guard but Burgess has control of the leg.
Burgess thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Kushida's head.

Burgess is looking for a kimura here.

Burgess is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Kushida doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Burgess.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Burgess is taking a breather. Kushida says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Tyler Burgess.
I think Burgess has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
