PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Henry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Antero Mela (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Henry comes into the arena with Unashamed blaring out of the sound system. John Henry is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Henry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Antero Mela!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Shigeki Fujiwara and Yukihiro Yamamoto.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Henry lands with a kick to the ribs.
Mela uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Henry.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Mela has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
A punch combination from Henry misses.
Henry fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Mela manages to avoid it.
Henry avoids the body shot from Mela.
Henry misses with a hook. Mela ducked under it nicely.
Mela looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
A bone on bone clash there as Mela blocks the leg kick.
Nice uppercut lands for Mela. That snapped Henry's head back.
Henry fails in his attempt to clinch.
A telegraphed right hand from Mela misses the target.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mela throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Henry sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Henry throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Henry looks to score with a jab to the body but Mela is just out of range.

We've been told by Henry's head coaches at Bjorn's Elite Team that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Mela throws a shot to the body.

Mela fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Henry uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Mela.
Henry is looking to counter punch.
Henry tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Mela was well out of range. Poor timing from Henry.

and Mela counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Mela sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Henry's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Henry has one foot on Mela's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Mela takes one on the button.
Henry slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Mela works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.

and Mela counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Henry!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mela is pressing down on Henry's thigh, looking to free his foot. Henry is holding on for now.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that John Henry will probably get the nod.
That's time! Henry's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

and Mela decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Henry's guard.

A nice side step and Mela releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

John Henry is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Mela tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Henry defends well and Mela ends up having to push Henry into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Henry tries to bum rush Mela with a series of wild strikes but Mela uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Mela is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Henry rather than just go for the knockout.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Henry takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Henry dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Mela. That did some damage!

That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Mela crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Henry - the referee stops the clock and Mela gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Henry. Mela manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

That was a close second round but I would say that John Henry will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Mela throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Henry on the side of the head.
Mela swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

John Henry is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to John Henry.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Henry, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
