5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gunji Koizumi! The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, James Glass and Chris Edwards.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Koizumi motions for Kirkland to come forward. Koizumi throws a leg kick but it misses it's target. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Kirkland. Koizumi is trying hard to land a takedown here. Kirkland sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Koizumi takes a shot right to the bread basket. Kirkland scores with a body shot.
Gunji Koizumi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Koizumi finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Kirkland was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger. Koizumi closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kirkland did well to prevent Koizumi getting side control. Kirkland is trying to stand up here but Koizumi is controlling him well. Koizumi is looking to advance position but Kirkland won't allow it. We've been hearing good reports from Kirkland's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. It looks like Gunji Koizumi has been cut. Koizumi misses with a low kick. Kirkland wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. Kirkland has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Koizumi. Kirkland cracks Koizumi with a good jab. Koizumi tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kirkland swivels and escapes. Troy Kirkland has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gunji Koizumi. Kirkland tries to land a front kick but Koizumi steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Koizumi drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Kirkland defends it well. Kirkland misses with a body kick. Troy Kirkland is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Koizumi closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Kirkland's guard. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Koizumi is stalling in the full guard. Koizumi prevents Kirkland from getting back to his feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Koizumi advances to half guard. Koizumi performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Kirkland is trying to stand.
Koizumi uses his free foot to push down on Kirkland's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Kirkland. You get the feeling that Kirkland really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Kirkland tries to buck Koizumi off but Koizumi takes his back! Kirkland trying to get back to his feet but Koizumi is in full control for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Koizumi is looking for the choke from the back position but Kirkland is controlling his hands well. Kirkland is looking to escape but he's done so without protecting himself and Koizumi manages to counter with a nice rear naked choke! Kirkland is in trouble and he's forced to tap!
