Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Marlin Paschal! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Yoshihiro Sakuraba! The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Yukihiro Shimada and Yasuomi Hirokawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Paschal changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Sakuraba looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Sakuraba wants to control but Paschal postures up. Paschal is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Sakuraba has escaped the position, nice work there. Paschal lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Sakuraba down.
Paschal is staying tight to Sakuraba's torso, preventing him from escaping. Paschal wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sakuraba keeps working. Paschal tries for a kimura but Sakuraba is defending well. Sakuraba manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Sakuraba is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Paschal looking for submissions from an awkward position here. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sakuraba is thwarting Paschal's attempts to control the position. Paschal is staying active underneath Sakuraba, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Paschal is looking to control Sakuraba's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Paschal avoid being mounted? Sakuraba frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Sakuraba looking to control but Paschal is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Paschal blocking the ground and pound. Sakuraba looking to finish with strikes here!
Paschal is in all sorts of trouble here.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Paschal tries to hold on but Sakuraba postures up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sakuraba looking to control but Paschal is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Paschal manages to regain half guard. Good work. Paschal looking for submissions off his back. Sakuraba prevents Paschal from improving his position. Sakuraba is thwarting Paschal's attempts to control the position. Sakuraba thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Sakuraba throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Paschal has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Sakuraba is working away from the top position though. Paschal avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Sakuraba.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Paschal is not content to let Sakuraba control the position. Paschal looking for submissions off his back. Sakuraba has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Paschal is trying to get back to full guard. Paschal works his way to full guard. Good work. Sakuraba passes into half guard. Sakuraba is trying to control the action in half guard but Paschal is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Sakuraba thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Paschal is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Sakuraba pulls his head out easily. Sakuraba missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sakuraba is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Paschal defends it well. Sakuraba is looking to take a break and control but Paschal is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Paschal looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Sakuraba thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Paschal's head. Sakuraba is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Sakuraba is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Paschal reverses the position - he's now on top in Sakuraba's guard. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Paschal content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Marlin Paschal will probably get the nod. That's time! Back to the action!
Sakuraba avoids a low kick by using good footwork. Paschal manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Sakuraba on his heels. He'll look to pass Sakuraba's guard now, I'm sure. Sakuraba is trying to keep Paschal in close.
Sakuraba is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Paschal has his hands clasped together but Sakuraba extends and breaks Paschal's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Sakuraba.
