And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Thiago Cunha and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Verhoeven throws a head kick that misses
and Joey counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Joey trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Joey forces his way into half guard.
Verhoeven is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Joey keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Joey is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Verhoeven defends it well.
Verhoeven holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Joey trying to mount his opponent but Verhoeven defends it.

Joey frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Joey looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Joey has hold of Verhoeven's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Verhoeven manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Joey tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
We've been hearing good reports from Joey's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Joey goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Verhoeven turns into him and now he's in Joey's guard.
Joey is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Verhoeven trying to control the position from guard on top but Joey is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Verhoeven has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Joey to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Verhoeven is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Joey pulls down on the head and he's put Verhoeven to sleep! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:43 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Tribbiani Joey!

A very excited looking Tribbiani Joey made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
