3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ediz Gulbahar! The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Daniel Cesar and Mauricio Rocha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vpach looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Gulbahar is fending him off so far but Vpach persists. Nope, Gulbahar circles away and we're back to standing. Gulbahar tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Vpach is able to avoid easily. Vpach half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. Gulbahar tries to work over Vpach's front leg with a kick but Vpach checks it. Vpach fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Gulbahar avoids it really well and circles away. Gulbahar throws out a counter right but Vpach avoids it with no problem. Vpach slips a straight right by Gulbahar. Gulbahar uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Vpach has time to react. Vpach misses with a takedown attempt - Gulbahar sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Gulbahar throws out a counter right but Vpach avoids it with no problem. Gulbahar looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Pixa Vpach. That's going to take a lot out of him. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gulbahar throws a body punch but Vpach moves out of range. Vpach changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Vpach tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Gulbahar swivels and escapes. Gulbahar throws the left hand but Vpach avoids the punch easily. Vpach fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Gulbahar avoids it really well and circles away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gulbahar cracks Vpach with an open hand slap. Vpach moves out of range as Gulbahar strikes. Vpach shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gulbahar pinned against the cage. Gulbahar gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Gulbahar misses with a body shot.
Vpach dives in for a single leg takedown but Gulbahar sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Gulbahar tries to land a front kick but Vpach steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Gulbahar misses with a body shot.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gulbahar throws a wild body kick that Vpach sees coming a mile off. Vpach drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Vpach shoots and misses and Gulbahar counters with a two punch combo. Gulbahar misses the shot to the body. Vpach tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Gulbahar defends well and Vpach ends up having to push Gulbahar into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Vpach is breathing heavily. Vpach shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gulbahar defends it nicely. Gulbahar connects with a right hand. Vpach shakes it off. Vpach shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gulbahar defends it nicely.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A jab from Gulbahar misses. Gulbahar connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son. Horrible takedown attempt by Vpach or perhaps it was just good defense by Gulbahar, which made it look bad. A nice side step and Gulbahar releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home. Vpach ducks under a wild hook from Gulbahar. Vpach tries to counter with a takedown but Gulbahar is quick to defend against it. Vpach is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Vpach misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Vpach takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. Vpach shoots for a double leg takedown but Gulbahar sprawls well. He's pushed Vpach's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Gulbahar throws out a counter right but Vpach avoids it with no problem.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gulbahar fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Vpach looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Vpach takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
A punch combination from Gulbahar misses. A decent looking cross lands there for Gulbahar. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Gulbahar has closed the distance and engaged Vpach in a clinch.
Gulbahar wants the takedown. Vpach is fighting it off but Gulbahar persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Vpach's guard against the cage. Gulbahar tries to free his leg and advance position but Vpach is retaining full guard. Vpach can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Gulbahar controls the pace. Gulbahar with a flurry of punches that miss. Gulbahar working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Gulbahar controlling from the top position. Gulbahar with a flurry of punches that miss.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Gulbahar engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Gulbahar throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Vpach works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Gulbahar tries to free his leg and advance position but Vpach is retaining full guard. Vpach seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission. Gulbahar content to stall in guard here. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Let's hope that Gulbahar has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
That's six minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Vpach tries for a takedown but Gulbahar sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Gulbahar tries to counter with a clinch but Vpach shakes him off and moves away. Gulbahar connects with the punch. Vpach takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Vpach shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Gulbahar as he avoids it easily. A nice side step and Gulbahar releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home. Gulbahar forces Vpach back against the cage and clinches. Gulbahar has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Vpach is trying to keep an underhook but Gulbahar manages to get the takedown into half guard. Gulbahar thows a huge punch but Vpach dodges it nicely.
Gulbahar working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Gulbahar lands strikes from half guard.
Vpach is rocked! Gulbahar controlling the action here.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Gulbahar throwing shots but Vpach is blocking nicely. Gulbahar with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Vpach wants to control but Gulbahar is keeping busy and won't allow it. Gulbahar not doing much here.
Vpach is looking for a sweep. Gulbahar is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Vpach trying to control here.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Vpach is trying to control but Gulbahar manages to pass to mount!
Vpach holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Gulbahar tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Vpach wants to control but Gulbahar is having none of it. Vpach is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Gulbahar is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Gulbahar lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Vpach tries to lock up and control but Gulbahar gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Gulbahar controlling the position easily from mount.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Vpach tries to hold on but Gulbahar pushes him away. Gulbahar controlling his opponent. Vpach tries to get back to half guard but can't. Gulbahar lands a big shot there that rocks Vpach but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Gulbahar postures up and connects with a big shot that has rocked Vpach badly. He's trying desperately to grab hold of Gulbahar around the waist but Gulbahar pushes him off and unloads with more strikes, forcing the referee to jump in and save him! Gulbahar is the winner by TKO! Gulbahar jumps onto the cage and shouts into the camera. "We did it momma!"
Ladies and gentlemen, after 9:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ediz Gulbahar! Ediz Gulbahar retains his heavyweight title!
