PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nick Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andrey Lapis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lapis has chosen Once Solemn as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nick Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 18 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Andrey Lapis!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Cecil Peabody and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lapis throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Diaz counters with a leg kick.
Diaz cracks Lapis with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Diaz bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Diaz just misses with a punch to the body.

Lapis drops his hands momentarily and Diaz takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Diaz scores with the left hand. Lapis knows he should have avoided that one.
Lapis takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.

Diaz definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Diaz takes a swing at Lapis's ribcage but misses.
Diaz does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Lapis drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Diaz defends it well.
Lapis uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Diaz.
Lapis takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Lapis shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Diaz is trying to defend but Lapis finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Lapis is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Diaz doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Lapis.
Lapis thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Diaz's head.
Diaz wants to get back to full guard.

Lapis looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Diaz shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Lapis manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Diaz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lapis swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Diaz wants to control from the top but Lapis keeps moving.

Diaz got a little sloppy there for a moment and Lapis has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Diaz has managed to get both his arms back between Lapis's legs - danger averted.

Lapis escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Diaz gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Lapis pulls Diaz in close to prevent any damage.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
A low kick from Diaz is predictable there
and Lapis counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Diaz lands a jab to the nose.
Diaz throws an overhand right that lands on Lapis's shoulder, as Lapis tries to avoid the shot.
Lapis punishes Diaz's body with a nice straight punch.
Diaz looks to throw the jab but Lapis is out of range.

The fighters are battling for position here. Diaz manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Lapis is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Diaz still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Diaz has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Lapis is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
