PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Janis Kons (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Janis Kons!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, John Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Kenichi Hosakawa and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Johnson darts in and clinches Kons up against the cage.

Johnson jumps guard.
Johnson is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Johnson scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Kons uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Johnson.
Johnson displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Kons.
Johnson appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.

Johnson darts in and clinches Kons up against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kons fails to pull guard.

Kons is fighting off a takedown attempt but Johnson is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Kons to the mat. Kons regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Johnson is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Johnson is stalling in the full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kons trying to control the position.
Kons knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Johnson on the ground.
Kons is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Johnson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Johnson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kons swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Johnson connects with a couple of short punches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kons not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Johnson scoring with punches to the head and body.
Johnson stands and throws Kons's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Kons stops Johnson from passing to mount.
Kons is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Johnson asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Johnson scores with punches from side control.
Kons is trying to improve his position.

Johnson decides to stand up, so the ref orders Kons to his feet.

Johnson moves into the clinch successfully.

Johnson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
John Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Johnson throws a low kick but Kons moves out of range easily.
Kons really is a fat lump.
Kons showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Johnson.

Johnson bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kons is trying to get back to half guard.
Johnson has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Johnson has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Johnson looking to score a takedown here. Kons is defending well but Johnson drives through and ends up in Kons's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Johnson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Kons wants to sweep here but Johnson controlling him for the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Johnson dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Johnson feints and as Kons raises his hands in defense, Johnson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Kons might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Kons wants to improve his position but instead Johnson has moved into half guard.
Kons is trying to maintain the position but Johnson is very close to passing his half guard.
Johnson is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Johnson in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Kons tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Johnson!
