Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Patrick Mcdaniel! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, John West! The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Roger Salmon and Chris Saunders.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! West looks for a takedown but Mcdaniel sprawls well. West rushes Mcdaniel and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Mcdaniel pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from West. West misses with a takedown attempt - Mcdaniel sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Mcdaniel has closed the distance and engaged West in a clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mcdaniel has West pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Mcdaniel pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending West tumbling to the mat - Mcdaniel dives into West's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. West trying to control the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mcdaniel content to stall in guard here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mcdaniel gets to his feet. West looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Mcdaniel throws a head kick but West moves out of range.
Mcdaniel drives through with a takedown into guard. West has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Mcdaniel has passed into side control.
You can see the frustration on West's face as Mcdaniel controls the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mcdaniel has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. West is looking to regain half guard here but Mcdaniel keeps moving and retains side control. Mcdaniel stands up. Mcdaniel really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Mcdaniel clinches up against the cage. Mcdaniel has West pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. West manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Mcdaniel gets a trip takedown into half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mcdaniel lands with a punch from half guard. West wants to get back to full guard but Mcdaniel has passed into side control. A lull in the action here. West is trying to work for a sweep but Mcdaniel has mounted him! West wants to hold on but Mcdaniel pushes him away. West has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
West is trying to break free.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mcdaniel connects with a big shot to the side of West's head.
West is really stuck here.
West looks winded! Mcdaniel avoiding West 's attempts to control his hands. Mcdaniel keeps control of the position easily here as West tries to buck him off.
Mcdaniel will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Patrick Mcdaniel dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Mcdaniel closes the distance and pushes West back into the cage. Mcdaniel tightens his grip and picks West up, before dumping him to the ground. West manages to land in guard. West looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Mcdaniel passes into side control.
Mcdaniel is staying tight to West's torso, preventing him from escaping. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mcdaniel is putting a hurting on West here, landing some big shots from side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mcdaniel cracks West with an elbow. That is naaassty. Mcdaniel taking a breather here. Mcdaniel is chipping away with strikes.
West can't do much from the bottom here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. West being controlled for a moment. West tries to control but Mcdaniel manages to take his back. West looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. Mcdaniel is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that West can do to turn this around? Mcdaniel has good solid back control here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. West trying to control the position but Mcdaniel manages to sink in the hooks. Mcdaniel controls the action. Mcdaniel gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes. Mcdaniel is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Mcdaniel gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Mcdaniel gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Mcdaniel apologises and we restart here on the feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Mcdaniel lands with a thumping leg kick.
Mcdaniel dodges the punch combination from West.
West tries to work over Mcdaniel's front leg with a kick but Mcdaniel checks it. West changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mcdaniel tries to avoid it but West manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mcdaniel to the ground. Mcdaniel escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Mcdaniel throwing a counter right hand but West manages to avoid it. West is breathing heavily. West shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Mcdaniel counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mcdaniel. Mcdaniel ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Mcdaniel no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Mcdaniel is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Mcdaniel is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! West has his hands clasped together but Mcdaniel extends and breaks West's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Mcdaniel.
