Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
10 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Bruce Tripplet!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Leon Will Westernfield!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Illya Tyunina and Fedor Mirinova.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tripplet moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Tripplet fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Tripplet will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Tripplet misses with a straight left.
And Westernfield tries to counter it with a takedown but Tripplet pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Westernfield gets a takedown into half guard.
Tripplet kicks off Westernfield and gets to his feet.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Tripplet gets in close and instigates a clinch.
A short uppercut from Tripplet.
Tripplet manages to break the clinch.
Westernfield darts in looking for a takedown but Tripplet gets double underhooks and turns Westernfield into the cage.
We've been told by Tripplet's head coaches at Devils Den New York that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Tripplet lands a slapping body shot.
Westernfield has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Westernfield shoots in and drives through. Tripplet sprawls well.
Westernfield has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
A jab from Tripplet does it's job there.
Leon Will Westernfield seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Westernfield on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Tripplet throws a combination. Westernfield tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Westernfield tries to score a power double leg takedown but Tripplet sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Westernfield somewhat.
Bruce Tripplet has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Leon Will Westernfield.
Danga de danga de dang - Tripplet scores with a four punch combination!
Westernfield is rocked!
Tripplet is pawing at Westernfield, trying to feel the distance before throwing out a cross that crashes into Westernfield's nose. Westernfield is badly hurt! Tripplet pounces, throwing wild strikes as both fighters end up on the ground! Westernfield tries desperately to hold on but Tripplet is relentless in his assault! As Westernfield receives an ever increasing number of unanswered strikes the referee pulls Tripplet away and this one is in the books!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:35 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Bruce Tripplet!
Bruce Tripplet retains his featherweight title!
Bruce Tripplet decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
