PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Les Willis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Merritt Barlow (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Barlow has chosen Intro - DMX as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The key to victory for Les Willis has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Merritt Barlow!
The judges for this bout are Ben Hemmingworth, Donatello Bradman and Ben Watson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barlow lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

Willis is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Barlow's half guard.

Willis is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Barlow sees it coming and defends easily.
Willis prevents Barlow from improving his position.

Willis looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Barlow tries to roll over but Willis keeps him under control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Barlow is defending against the submission attempts here by Willis.

As Barlow backs away, Willis returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.

Barlow manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Willis on his heels. He'll look to pass Willis's guard now, I'm sure.

Barlow takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Willis misses with the ground and pound.
Willis wants to stand but Barlow is controlling his arm.
Barlow tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Willis wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Willis lands some shots froms side control.
Barlow is looking to regain half guard here but Willis keeps moving and retains side control.
Willis throws an elbow but Barlow slips to the side and avoids it well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Willis is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Barlow has escaped the position, nice work there.
Barlow is trying to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Les Willis will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

and Willis counters with a three punch combo that has Barlow backing up. Barlow nods at Willis to acknowledge the strikes.

Barlow has hold of one of Willis's legs. Willis is fighting the takedown attempt but Barlow gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Barlow wants to get up but he can't break Willis's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Willis knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Barlow on the ground.

A close second round but Merritt Barlow will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Willis bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Willis is looking to take a break and control but Barlow is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Barlow shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Willis's guard.
Barlow is looking to pass into half guard but Willis pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Willis is in guard.


Barlow has his foot on Willis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Willis works his way back into a safe position though.

Barlow wants to free his trapped foot but Willis is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Barlow tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

I would just about give that final round to Merritt Barlow.
I think Barlow has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
