Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jamie Varner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Lucas Silva Jr! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Leandro Rodrigues and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Varner shoots and misses and Silva Jr counters with a two punch combo. Varner shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Silva Jr has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Silva Jr swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Varner fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Silva Jr avoids it really well and circles away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jamie Varner. That's going to take a lot out of him. Varner shoots in looking for a takedown but Silva Jr manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Varner's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Silva Jr throws a leg kick that is checked and Varner counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Silva Jr! We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Varner creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Silva Jr looks to move to half guard but instead Varner has passed into mount! Damn! This has been an exciting period of action! Varner unloading with bombs!

Varner has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Varner sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Varner is in the full mount, landing strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Varner with the ground and pound from mount. Varner controlling his opponent. Varner has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Varner's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Silva Jr is in all sorts of trouble here.

The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Silva Jr takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Varner raining down shots from the mount! Varner working Silva Jr over with strikes here. Silva Jr tries to reverse the position but Varner maintains control. Varner controlling from mount. Varner postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Silva Jr looks a forlorn figure.

Silva Jr is rocked! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Varner controlling the position easily from mount. Varner raining down hammerfists from mount. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Varner feints and as Silva Jr raises his hands in defense, Varner changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Silva Jr being controlled here, momentarily. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Silva Jr looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

That's one minute gone in the round. Silva Jr is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Varner is aware though and is defending well. Silva Jr is breathing heavily. Varner scoring with punches to the head and body. Varner with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Varner sitting in guard, not really doing much. Silva Jr has his hands on Varner's head, controlling the position. Varner looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Varner looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. As Varner backs off Silva Jr throws a huge counter combo but Varner manages to avoid it all. Varner closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Silva Jr did well to prevent Varner getting side control. Silva Jr is trying to escape back to his feet but Varner uses the scramble to pass into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Silva Jr tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Varner presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount! Varner controlling the pace for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Silva Jr really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Varner landing punches. Varner controlling his opponent. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jamie Varner dominated that second round. That's time! Varner's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!
Varner throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Silva Jr tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Varner is in Silva Jr's guard. Varner showing good wrestling skills to control the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Varner lands a couple of elbows. Varner is stalling in the full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Further stalling from Varner. Silva Jr wants to get back to his feet but Varner is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Silva Jr is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Silva Jr throws a body kick, spinning off balance and Varner counters with a nice double leg into guard. Silva Jr takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Silva Jr is trying to keep Varner in close.
Varner controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. If it seems like I'm not saying a lot, it's just because Varner is stinking the place up with his stalling. Silva Jr looking for a guillotine here but Varner defends easily.
Varner is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Varner goes for a double leg but Silva Jr avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Silva Jr continues to drive forward. Lucas Silva Jr is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Varner fails with a takedown attempt. Varner scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Silva Jr is looking to get back to his feet here but Varner is keeping cool and he's managed to take Silva Jr's back. Silva Jr is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Varner off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.

Lucas Silva Jr has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! You can see the frustration on Silva Jr's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
And that's the end of the fight! Jamie Varner showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Varner, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
