Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jesse Mathis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rick James has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Jesse Mathis's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jesse Mathis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Rick James!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

James drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
James is a very stocky fighter. Infact he's such a weird shape that he's almost like some sort of comedy character - it's hard to believe he's real.
James slows the pace down.
James tries to advance to mount but can't.

James wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mathis, who protects the arm well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
You can see the frustration on Mathis's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
James in side control, throwing shots but Mathis defends.
James slows the pace down.
Mathis prevents James from improving position.
James tries to score with some ground and pound. Mathis controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

James decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Mathis really is a fat lump.

James drives through with a takedown into Mathis's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
James wants to pass the guard but Mathis is keeping the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mathis has a closed guard, preventing James from standing up.
James stays in close to Mathis's body and controls the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mathis looking for a guillotine here but James defends easily.
James is pushing down on Mathis's leg trying to pass to half guard. Mathis is fighting to maintain full guard but James has managed to sneak the leg through.
James perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
James stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mathis swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Mathis avoids a punch combination nicely.

James shoots in and gets a takedown into Mathis's guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rick James dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



The fight moves into the clinch position.
Mathis can't get the takedown.
Mathis tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
James lands with a short shot to the head.
Mathis is trying to pull guard but James turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Mathis is fighting off a takedown attempt but James is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Mathis to the mat. Mathis regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Mathis is looking to stand back up but James counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Mathis.

James with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Let's hope that James has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Mathis is in trouble now - James has advanced to mount!
James controlling from the full mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
James throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Mathis blocking the ground and pound.

James is continuing to stall.
James unloads with some shots from mount but Mathis bucks and avoids them well.

James stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

Mathis gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows James to score an easy takedown into full guard.
James has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

James gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Rick James seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

James advances to half guard.
James looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

James stands up and beckons Mathis to join him on the feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

James drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rick James showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



James closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
James throws a strike aimed at the side of Mathis's head but Mathis avoids it well.

James stands up and beckons Mathis to his feet.

Mathis drops to a knee looking for a takedown but James gets the underhooks and prevents it.

James jumps guard and drags Mathis to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Mathis might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
James pulls Mathis in close to prevent any damage.

Mathis is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! James is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! James has escaped and now he's on top!


James gets to his feet. Mathis looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

James clinches up with Mathis and pushes him back against the cage.

James throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

James decides to return to a standing position.

Mathis gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows James to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Mathis is working an open guard so James takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

James shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Mathis is trying to defend but James finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

James is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Mathis defends it well.

Mathis has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. James is working away from the top position though.

Rick James comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well James has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
