Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
18 - 21 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mario Eikmeyer! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Paul OConnell! The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Albert Achterberg and Paulsen Ambrosius.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! OConnell lands a nice shot to the body.
OConnell tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. The fight moves into the clinch position. OConnell gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Eikmeyer.
OConnell lands a shoulder strike. OConnell lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Eikmeyer. OConnell cracks Eikmeyer with a nice body shot. A quick uppercut on the inside from OConnell. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that OConnell has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as OConnell takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life. Eikmeyer wants to take the fight to the mat but OConnell manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. OConnell is stalling here.
A short left from OConnell. OConnell lands a hook to the side of the head. Eikmeyer drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mario Eikmeyer. That's going to take a lot out of him. OConnell just leaning against Eikmeyer, taking a breather.
That's one minute gone in the round. Eikmeyer has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. OConnell is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. A shot in the inside from OConnell. Eikmeyer has OConnell pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. OConnell manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Eikmeyer is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Eikmeyer's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button! Eikmeyer has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. OConnell is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. We've been hearing reports that Eikmeyer has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Eikmeyer is breathing heavily. OConnell lands a left hand.
OConnell lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards. OConnell gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
It looks like Mario Eikmeyer has been cut. Eikmeyer wants to take the fight to the mat but OConnell manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch. Eikmeyer wants a takedown but no success here.
OConnell pushes Eikmeyer against the cage. OConnell is working some dirty boxing. OConnell pushes off with a quick right hook! Eikmeyer goes down! Eikmeyer tries to stand but stumbles back to his kness! OConnell moves in to finish and the ref steps in to prevent any more damage!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Paul OConnell! Paul OConnell bigged himself up after the win. The crowd seemed to love it.
