Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, John Machado! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Luiz Angelo! The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Paul Tew and Phil Schofield.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Machado shoots for a takedown but Angelo saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Angelo feints the counter takedown. Machado misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Angelo slaps away a takedown attempt from Machado, before circling back to the center of the mat. Angelo changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Machado. That's going to take a lot out of him. Machado closes this distance looking for a takedown but Angelo circles away. Angelo works over Machado's head and body with a nice combination.
It looks like John Machado has been cut. Machado fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Angelo avoids it really well and circles away. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Machado closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Angelo is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Machado has just dragged him back down to the mat.
That's one minute gone in the round. Machado is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Angelo knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Machado tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Angelo wants to control but Machado postures up. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Angelo is looking to regain half guard here but Machado keeps moving and retains side control. Angelo struggling a bit here. A lull in the action here as Machado stalls from top position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Machado looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Angelo is looking for a sweep. Machado has hold of Angelo's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Angelo tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Machado cranks the arm and Angelo screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Angelo, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
